The BMW X1, which had been fully redesigned and re-engineered for 2016, adds new features for 2017 along with an impressive trophy. For its first-ever 10Best Trucks and SUVs list, Car & Driver named the X1 the best Subcompact Luxury SUV.
BMW is well known for earning places on Car & Driver's 10Best Cars lists for more than 30 years. For the first time, the magazine has published a 10Best Trucks and SUVs list, so it seems appropriate that a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle would land on the list.
The second-generation BMW X1 brought greater room and even better performance than the original model. For 2017, the range grew with a new X1 sDrive28i model with front-wheel drive, along with some revised option choices. The biggest change is a switch to standard suspension for smoother ride comfort. If you want the stiffer M Sport suspension for more agility, it's now included in the M Sport Package. If you like the Sport Seats, though, you can now get them without selecting a larger package.
What did Car & Driver like so much about the 2017 BMW X1? The magazine started with praise for its roominess:
"The X1 is one of the few subcompact crossovers with a genuinely spacious passenger compartment and a versatile cargo hold," Car & Driver said in its review. Indeed, the advantages over competitors can be substantial, with 37 inches of rear seat legroom in the X1 comfortably surpassing the Mercedes-Benz GLA (27.1 inches) and Audi Q3 (31.1 inches) Notably, that comparison holds up in the cargo hold, too, where the X1 offers up to 61.5 cubic feet of space versus just 41.8 in the Mercedes and 48.2 in the Audi. The X1 simply makes for a better family vehicle.
It's not just the amount of room that makes the BMW X1 stand apart, but also its versatility. For example, the standard 40:20:40 split rear seatbacks give you plenty of choices for carrying passengers and cargo, or both. The available Sliding and Reclining rear seat boosts usability by letting you slide the rear seat forward up to five inches to gain more carrying space behind it. Your passengers will love the way the seatbacks can recline by up to 31 degrees.
Not surprisingly, Car & Driver loves the way the BMW X1 drives. Its 2.0-liter TwinTurbo four-cylinder engine puts an impressive 228 hp and 258 lb/ft of torque at your disposal, controlled with the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. That winning combination makes the X1 the quickest vehicle in its class, with zero to 60 in just 6.3 seconds for the model with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
BMW Sports Activity Vehicles provide the higher ride height that so many customers prefer. The X1 offers 7.2 inches of ground clearance, which enhances all-weather capability and gives you a commanding view of the road ahead. Standard Hill Descent Control helps you head down inclines with greater confidence.
The Car & Driver 10 Best award is certainly welcome in the BMW trophy case.
There's another accolade, however, that family buyers will especially appreciate. The BMW X1, when equipped with the front crash prevention of the optional Driver Assistance Plus package, earns the critical IIHS Top Safety Pick rating. The package includes Lane Departure Warning and Frontal Collision Warning with Pedestrian Warning and City Collision Mitigation.
When it comes to infotainment, the BMW X1 covers all bases, as well. Standard iDrive uses a 6.5-inch display screen. You can add the Navigation Business option for that screen, or choose the Technology Package and upgrade to Navigation with the Touchpad Controller and a larger 8.8-inch freestanding screen. The Technology Package also adds a Head Up Display and BMW Remote Services.
The X1 may be the brand's most affordable Sports Activity Vehicle, but it doesn't skimp on luxury. You'll find eight-way power front seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers and a power tailgate standard. The standard HiFi Sound System powers seven speakers with a 205-watt digital amplifier, and you can upgrade to the 12-speaker, 360-watt harman/kardon surround sound system.
