5 Best Bike Trails in Michigan
Enjoy the natural landscapes of Michigan along these bike paths

When the snow is gone, the true beauty of Michigan’s natural surroundings begins to emerge. One way to enjoy the outdoors in the Great Lake State is by traveling on one of its numerous bike trails. While there are plenty of great trails from which to choose, the following are often regarded as the best in the state.

Lansing River Trail

The Lansing River Trail extends for 13 miles, and much of the path runs alongside the nearby Red Cedar River as it snakes through the city’s most populated areas. The trail also connects some of the city’s most popular attractions. You’ll be able to make stops by Hawk Island County Park, the Lansing City Market and even the Potter Park Zoo, which is home to animals like lions, monkeys and playful river otters.

Iron Ore Heritage Trail

Head out on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail in Marquette County to experience rich history and natural beauty. This 47-mile trail, located in the northernmost region of the state, runs through the heart of what was once one of the largest sectors of mining in Michigan. Today, you can learn all about the region’s heritage with plenty of historic stops along the way.

Bay City Loop

There’s no better way to explore the quaint Bay City than by traversing the scenic Bay City Loop bike trail. The Bay City Loop takes you on a 17.5-mile tour of the area, complete with stops at downtown shops, parks and the nearby marina. The path even connects to the Bay State Recreation Area, where you can enjoy even more outdoor activities like camping, picnicking and a variety of nature programs.

Kal-Haven Trail

If you want to set out on an extensive Michigan journey, the Kal-Haven Trail is the perfect route. The trail, which runs for 34.5 miles, connects the city of Kalamazoo to the popular beachfront town of South Haven. You’ll want to set aside plenty of time for this trek, especially with all the scenic stops along the way.

Detroit RiverWalk

The city of Detroit has undergone some major renovations in recent years, and the best place to view these changes is along the 3.5-mile Detroit RiverWalk. The RiverWalk was built along the former industrial riverfront of the Motor City. While it may not have always been the most picturesque place in Detroit, the area is currently a lot cleaner and serving as the home for events like the annual River Days festival. Now, it’s also a perfect route for any urban cyclists.

Take advantage of the warm weather while it lasts by planning a trip along any of these scenic bike trails in Michigan.
