Autumn is a fantastic time to enjoy the cooler weather and gather with family and friends to celebrate community as well as tasty food and drinks. Make your get-togethers more festive when you experience one or more of these entertaining Southern Californian festivals.
California Avocado Festival
Kick off fall by paying homage to the avocado by attending the California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria, the weekend of Oct. 5-7. Now in its 32nd year, this Southern California extravaganza offers a range of activities for kids and adults. Visit the AvoEXPO TENT to browse historical photos of the avocado, learn about avocado grafting and witness the sizable entrants in the Largest Avocado Contest. Try your luck at one of the competitions, such as the Best Dressed Avocado or the World Famous Guacamole Contest.
For non-avocado entertainment, head to one of the four event stages to catch one of the more than 75 musical acts. You can even bring along your pooch since the DAWG staff will provide up to two hours of doggie daycare for free.
La Jolla Art & Wine Festival
Get jolly in La Jolla by appreciating the array of art and wine selections at this prestigious shindig held on Oct. 6-7 on Girard Avenue. It’s no surprise this well-attended two-day event has garnered the reputation of being one of Southern California’s most prestigious art and wine festivals. Adults can linger over libations in the Wine & Beer Garden to sample drinks from more than 40 local and international breweries and wineries. Children can keep busy with hands-on experiments, crafts, painting and conquering a gymnastics obstacle course. Plus, you can browse the wares of more than 150 U.S. and Mexican artists. You can also check out one of the 15 pet adoption stations if you’ve been looking for a furry addition to your family.
Santa Barbara Harbor & Seafood Festival
If you’re a seafood connoisseur, you won’t want to miss the Santa Barbara Harbor & Seafood Festival on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., where you can celebrate this region’s legacy for cultivating sustainably harvested, high-quality seafood. Converse with fisherman at the festival to learn more about the industry or browse a bounty of culinary booths to sample fresh oysters, mussels, crab and barbequed albacore. You can also feast on seafood paella or clam chowder. With free admission and child-friendly activities, this is a great festival for the whole family.
San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival
Find a new favorite wine to serve at your upcoming holiday gatherings when you stop by the San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival. This year’s events run from Nov. 11-18 and feature some of the best international wines as well as popular chefs and culinary personalities. More than 150 wine, beer and spirit purveyors will offer their contributions. You can also sample tasty dishes from 60 of San Diego’s best restaurants. Wine-tasting seminars, luncheons with customized wine pairings and cooking classes by James Beard award-winning chefs round out the event’s offerings. No wonder this festival attracts more than 10,000 wine and food enthusiasts each year!
