The first and only current plug-in hybrid minivan, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a unique vehicle within the automotive industry. As the Pacifica Hybrid continues to pull in awards for its innovation, the question arises of how it manages to offer such efficiency.
The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid runs on a unique powertrain — unique in both the Chrysler lineup and the minivan market as a whole.
First, the Pacifica Hybrid uses electricity from its lithium-ion battery pack, which runs power through an eFlite Si-EVT transmission to dual electric motors. This electric power is then bolstered by a 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine, which operates when the battery runs low or the minivan is under strenuous acceleration.
In for the long haul
Most of the time, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid can perform all daily driving on electric power alone, as the battery pack provides enough electricity to go 33 miles on a single charge.* However, when that charge runs down and the V6 is engaged, the Pacifica Hybrid doesn’t turn into some inefficient fuel-guzzler. Instead the V6 operates with the hybrid system to provide an impressive 32 mpg in combined city and highway driving, according to the EPA.**
With these two power sources operating together, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid offers an eyebrow-raising total range of up to 566 miles.***
Keeping the charge
To keep that efficiency going, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid needs to be recharged — luckily, with a 240-volt charging port (offered by Mopar but sold separately), the minivan can get back to full in just two hours.
To maintain that efficiency while driving, the 2018 Pacifica Hybrid offers a coaching tool that helps drivers conserve power. It works very simply: When the Pacifica Hybrid is being driven efficiently, it signals as such to the driver with a small green light. When the minivan is pushed beyond the eco-friendly range, the light turns white.
With its offering of a plug-in hybrid powertrain in a minivan, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a unique and efficient vehicle in its segment.
