The four-door Dodge Charger and two-door Dodge Challenger may be known for their pedal-pushing performance, but safety is also a top priority for the track-ready siblings. Top safety scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are proof of that.
Both the 2017 Dodge Charger and 2017 Challenger were recently awarded the highest rating of five stars overall from the NHTSA in the organization's vehicle evaluation program. This marks the 10th time the Charger has earned this designation and the fifth for the Challenger.
The use of high-strength steel and advanced safety features in both models played an integral role in earning these scores. The Charger, for instance, is available with more than 80 safety and security features, and the Challenger is close behind with more than 70. The Charger can be equipped with Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning-Plus and Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist while the Challenger boasts Forward Collision Warning, Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection.
"This further validates the robustness of our safety engineering," says Mike Dahl, Head of Vehicle Safety and Regulatory Compliance, FCA - North America. "But crashworthiness is only half the story. We are immensely proud of the investment we've made in the driver-assist technologies that help enable crash mitigation."
The newest generation of the Uconnect infotainment system also makes its debut on the 2017 Charger and Challenger. This system enables drivers to keep their focus on the road while also staying connected.
"The ability to fine tune such a feature helps improve driver comfort and confidence, both of which contribute to safe vehicle operation," says Adam Chiappetta, Senior Manager - Active Safety and Driver-Assist Technologies at FCA US.
The 2017 Dodge Charger is available in SE and SXT (with All Wheel Drive optional), R/T, Daytona, R/T Scat Pack, Daytona 392, SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat with four engines ranging from the 292-hp 3.6-liter Pentastar® V6 up to the 707-hp supercharged HEMI® SRT Hellcat V8.
