Alternatives to S'Mores
Upgrade your bonfire snacks with these delicious recipes

While traditional s’mores are tasty, there are other out of the ordinary desserts to snack on when you’re lounging near a bonfire after dinner. Here are five suggestions that should satisfy your cravings in new ways.

Brie apple sandwich

A savory take on campfire snacks, the Brie apple sandwich delivers a fruity and cheesy combination that’s sure to delight your taste buds. Following the recipe by Brooke Christen from Nesting with Grace, for each sandwich you’ll need one slice of apple and one sliver of Brie. Using a marshmallow skewer, impale the apple and cheese slices and roast them until the apple is slightly toasted and the cheese starts to melt. Use two Ritz crackers to sandwich the apple and cheese.

Roasted tomato and basil

Christen presents a s’more alternative for those who appreciate Mediterranean cuisine: roasted tomato and basil. An after-dinner bonfire version of bruschetta, this treat calls for the following ingredients: cherry tomatoes, burrata cheese, basil, balsamic reduction and crackers. Roast the cherry tomatoes using a marshmallow skewer until the tomatoes wrinkle to indicate that the interior has cooked. Assemble the cracker sandwiches by spreading the cheese, adding basil, topping it with a tomato and drizzling balsamic reduction on the top.  

Prosciutto and goat cheese

Faith Durand of The Kitchn shares a s’more alternative recipe that will appeal to carnivores. Gather the following ingredients from your local grocery store: wheat crackers, goat cheese and prosciutto. Skewer the prosciutto and cheese, then roast it over the fire. If you prefer, you could alternatively put the prosciutto and cheese on a tin foil sheet, crumple the sheet to form a small package and roast it on the coals. Spread the toasted prosciutto and cheese mixture onto the crackers and enjoy.

Tortilla banana boat

Jeff Smith, editor with Traverse Magazine, posted this scrumptious recipe for a sweet dessert snack that you can make over the fire. You’ll need flour tortilla shells, chocolate chips, bananas, peanut butter and tin foil. To prepare the snack, peel the banana and slice it in half lengthwise. Put the banana in the middle of a tortilla. Spread with the toppings, then wrap the entire tortilla in tin foil. Place the tin foil package onto the coals and let it bake until the banana is tender.  Eat it with a fork — or with your fingers, if you prefer. 

Roasted Pineapple

What easier way to transport yourself to someplace tropical than by incorporating pineapple into your campfire dessert? All you need is a fresh pineapple and some cinnamon, as Christen relates. Slice the pineapple into hand size wedges or squares. Next, use a marshmallow skewer to roast the fruit slice over the fire until the exterior turns golden brown. Garnish with cinnamon and enjoy the juicy goodness that will satisfy your sweet tooth while offering something a bit lighter and guilt-free to enjoy after dinner.

Supplement conventional s’mores with one or more of these treats the next time you and your crew are in the mood for a change from this classic snack.
