Playing to Learn in Pacifica, California
by Jean McMartin

I teach fifth grade at Vallemar School in Pacifica, California. Vallemar has 545 students; most come from mid to upper income families and speak English as their first language. Less than 5% are ESL. Learning through play is too often a forgotten art in this day and age of teaching but it is a powerful tool in developing skills and reinforcing understanding.
