EDGE Now Open to Middle School Students
Register Your Middle School Students By April 30
Danielle Tietjen

In a day and age when life is overwhelming and we grow busier by the moment, how can we be effective leaders in our youth programs? There are retreats, youth nights, confirmation, parent nights, summer festivals, camps, hospital visits, Bible studies, and the list goes on and on. How can we keep it all straight? Wouldn’t it be great if we could bring everything we want in a youth program into one amazing event? Youth Encounter has done just that! EDGE is a National Youth Event that provides worship, ministry training, multiple service projects, and mission opportunities in one high-energy, Christ-centered week for your middle school and high school students. EDGE is being held July 20-24, 2007, in beautiful downtown Kansas City, MO. If you would like to add your middle school students to this Event, you are not too late. Our standard registration deadline is April 30; you can register your middle school and high school students for the low price of $235. For more information on EDGE and for online registration options, please visit us at www.youthencounter.org/edge.

A punch reception and silent auction will begin at 5:30. The silent auction will include many wonderful items including theater tickets, gift certificates, museum tickets, and global items from our International Teams!

Dinner will begin at 6:45 with a short break afterwards before beginning the program portion of our dinner. The program, which will focus on our new Community Based Team ministry, will include music from 100 White Flags, a local alumni band (see below); music and ministry sharing from our pilot Community Based Team, Lifeline (see below); a drama from our Stillwater Community Based Team; and a sharing on the vision and future of Youth Encounter’s ministry involving Community Based Teams.

Reflecting on Rescue
How Event Ministry Brings Help and Healing to Those in Need
Nate Osmundson

Our theme of “Rescue” for Quakes this year is an obvious shout-out to the feeling that all humanity has that something is not quite right in this world. I lived for a long time (and often still do) ignoring the fact that my life truly needs to be ransomed. Sadly, it is only after reflection that I remember how much a part of this problem I am, and how much I need some sort of life preserver to grasp onto. Thankfully, there is one. The Son of God lived and died for my wrongdoings. He gives a definitive rescue, once and for all, to everyone who believes.

At Quakes, Zones, and EDGE, participants and staff are presented with the opportunity to take part in this idea of rescue through acts of service. Youth Encounter is partnered with Feed My Starving Children, Give a Kid a Backpack, and Habitat for Humanity. These organizations deal with direct needs of the people they serve. Feed My Starving Children does exactly what their name states; they collect donations and help volunteers package the food to be sent directly to those in need. Give a Kid a Backpack is another organization that collects backpacks and school supplies to give those children who do not have them. Habitat for Humanity helps the homeless or impoverished into new homes in which they may raise their families. The people who are served by these organizations are being rescued from hunger, homelessness, and poverty. Youth Encounter is very happy to partner with these organizations in meeting needs in the world around us.

God Said, You Can Do This

God is such an awesome God. So much has happened since hitting the road. There have been so many firsts for me. Right after we hit the road, our first XP back, I gave the sharing. And like, I didn't have much time to prepare myself. Which normally would make me go crazy, but God kept me calm and said, "You can do this," and for only being my second full sharing since I hit the road, I think I did good. And then the next weekend was an even bigger first for me--I was at my very first Quake ever in my life, and man, there were over six hundred kids there, and they were really rocking. God opened my eyes.

I was so nervous going into because I was doing so many things I have never done, and God's like, "I got it, everything will be okay." And on that Saturday, I led my very first Trek (a breakout session) with Koral, which was crazy because I'm leading something and I had never even been to a "Trek." But by the end of that day, it felt like we were pros at it, we did three back to back with 60-80 kids in each. Then on Sunday, closing celebration was just about start and Jamie comes to me and says, "Well, you haven't come up on stage, would you like to give the benediction?" I was like, sure, I can do that, (really I'm like, I don't do so well in front of so many people). But I did it. By the end of the celebration, I basically memorized the benediction and right before the last song, I was up on that stage. I was so nervous, I think it was the lights that did it, but by the time I got off that stage, I was shaking. But it was so crazy and amazing.

God Is Using Us for His Purposes
Read Excerpts from Watermark Denmark's Online Journal

There are times I doubt the effectiveness of our ministry. When we play two or three concerts a day and rush from place to place, we cannot see how our programs make a difference to people (if they do at all). I might talk to two people after a program for a couple minutes and then go pack up equipment. Or we might have a confirmation class that runs through the back door before we even have a chance to step off the stage. Was anyone listening? Did anyone even hear the Gospel of Jesus?

In the same way, we have so many chances to see the difference we are making. Yesterday we played for a confirmation class, visited their school, and played a concert at the church down the street. Most of the time I do not expect confirmation students to be interested in us (let us be honest, we are not that cool), but there were quite a few students that came to see us again at the church. One of them even drew us a way sweet picture of us playing. It is very encouraging to see people, especially young people, listening to us.
