Join a Team Katrina Work Crew
Your Support Is Needed For This Critical Effort
Brett Koopman
What is Youth Encounter doing to
support hurricane relief in the Gulf Coast?
Last fall one of our ministry
teams, New Dawn, had the privilege of being in Ocean Springs, Mississippi for a
month working with Christus Victor Lutheran Church’s disaster response to Hurricane
Katrina victims. One of their responsibilities was leading worship for the
volunteers who are there doing relief work. At the end of their month, they
found it very hard to leave. They were profoundly touched by the plight of the
people in this region. They also felt very privileged to be a part of this
vibrant ministry to Hurricane Katrina survivors.
After talking with the
team members and hearing from many youth directors that they would love to go
to the Gulf Coast to do mission work, TJ Anderson, Vice President of National
Events, contacted the volunteer coordinator at Christus Victor. Following a
number of conversations and much prayer, Youth Encounter agreed to assist them
by organizing trips to this area and functioning within the ministry that is
already in place.

Team Katrina: Living the Gospel in the Gulf Coast
Call Today to Join a Work Crew
Susie Anderson
Gary Korpi,
Office Services Director at Youth Encounter, recently took a trip to the Gulf
Coast region of the U.S. to visit Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Ocean
Springs, MS. Christus Victor is serving as a Hurricane Katrina Disaster
Response Center, helping the people in their region recover from what has been
described as the most devastating natural disaster to ever hit the U.S.
Before
arriving in the area, Korpi was told to be prepared for what he would see. People
said that no words or pictures could tell the story of the devastation caused
by the storm. Korpi says, “I witnessed the destructive power of Hurricane
Camille in 1969; I get hurricanes. After touring the area, I realized that I
hadn’t gotten it at all. It is far worse than Camille, far worse than anything I
could have imagined. Written words on a page can stimulate the imagination, and
it is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but it is only one
dimensional. To truly understand the magnitude of destruction and the need for
help, one must be there. You need all five of your senses to even begin to
grasp all that people have to deal with on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The need
for help is simply overwhelming.”

Opportunities Abounding!
Serve God and His People With Youth Encounter
Dana Peterson
Who do you know who is
looking for a service opportunity? Who do you know who is wondering how God
might use them? Is your congregation looking for a mission connection?
There have never been more
opportunities to serve through Youth Encounter ministries. You might know that
we are looking for men and women to serve for one year on Captive Free
or on an International
Team. And it’s true! We need members for our musical, relational teams for
one year. But not only musicians—we need people interested in drama, computers and
office skills to help make Team Ministry happen.

Thirty-Two People, Twelve Countries, One Gospel
International Teams Depart This Month
Amber Harder
Hej! Guten Tag! Szia! These
greetings will soon fill the ears of our International Teams who venture out
this month to twelve different countries! While there, they will minister in
orphanages, boarding schools, churches, street corners, and even market places!
One of the great things
about the International Teams is the way in which they are used overseas. Some
of the countries they will visit have not had a Youth Encounter team for three
years and are anxious to work with the teams to share the good news of Jesus
Christ. Some teams even have the opportunity to visit places where no other
team has been before!

God Has Been Working in a Very Real Way
Read Excerpts from Captive Free West Lakes' Online Journal
Captive Free West Lakes
The host homes that I have
been at have been remarkable. The families have been so giving, caring,
understanding, and genuine. In Clintonville, WI, we had our day off, and I
enjoyed nothing more than sitting around the house, watching TV, doing laundry,
and checking my email. My host family there, they are the coolest people ever.
I really saw God working in that home. I had fun getting to know my host
siblings Maddie and Mike, and then my host parents. Shortly after in Waupaca,
we did a program at the Lutheran church, and the youth at the church were
amazing, absolutely amazing. They worshiped right there with us; I could really
feel God and His holy spirit moving in that place. We had fun playing the
"Who Done It" game with the youth. They were crazy! We also did a
little bit of accents/impersonations. Shari did her "Rifka" and then
her "Oompa Loompa" dance, and then two of the youth did a hilarious
skit from Mad TV. We were all rolling on the floor, dying from laughter!

Every Day Is Still an Adventure
Read Excerpts from Watermark Denmark's Online Journal
Watermark Denmark
We had been invited to a detention center
for young males, but it was scheduled for Sunday night, and that would mean
giving up most of our off-day for a drive. Or we could not do the detention
center and have the whole day off, or we could do it and drive after it was over
(meaning from 8 p.m.-1 a.m.) but have the day free. Well, we all desperately
needed a day off out of the van, but there was no way we were passing up on the
program, so we took option three. We then called ahead and were able to get
there early to do an electric program for the kids rather than acoustic.
The boys, who ranged in age from 6-22,
were so excited, helped us load in, and then sang for us the song
"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" a capella before the program started!!
It was so sweet; these young men and boys really just wanting to hang out and
relate with us, and they had no idea "Boulevard" was one of the songs
we would perform!!! So as the first chords rang out, I motioned for the singers
to come up and all six did. I held the mike down to them, and we sang the
choruses together...it is yet another memory I will never forget. Kids who have
been in jail for much of their lives standing around a microphone, belting out
a song about loneliness, brokenness, and the search for someone, something out
there to hold on to, together as one a few moments before we as a team try to
explain the answer. That Jesus is the one they can turn to, the one who loves
them even if everyone they have ever known hasn't.

What It Means To Be the Body of Christ
Read Excerpts from Captive Free West Coast's Online Journal
Captive Free West Coast
People on the road are so
gracious to us! God has shown me so much of what it means to be a part of the
body of Christ—a family that networks all over the world. We constantly meet
new people always knowing it may be our last time together. Still, they supply
us with everything we need—even friendship! There has, however, been a family I
have stayed with three times now. The first time we stayed up late chatting and
jamming, and I left the next morning sad that our stay was so short. By God's
grace, it worked out that a week later, we were in the area and were able to
come back. The family was at the door with arms literally held open, and we
were welcomed "home." That really made me think about our new meaning
of home. This year, the cliché "home is where the heart is" rings
true. My home is with my host families, my teammates, and most of all, my King.

Sounds Like Love 2005: Celebrating Together
Get Your DVD Today!
Susie Anderson
On November 11, 2005, five hundred high school students and
their leaders gathered at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, MN for a
weekend of singing, Bible study, and laughter. Sounds Like Love involved
students from seven Midwestern states and churches from three denominations. We
started the weekend with worship and a time of getting to know one another.
Besides rehearsals to learn songs, choreography, and speaking parts, there was
time for Bible teaching, as well as time with our guest artists, Lauren Redpath
and Fusebox. Over 1600 people attended the two wonderful performances on
November 13. A DVD of the performances is available through Youth Encounter. To
order one, call Susie at 651-287-8481. We are already looking forward to the
next event from November 10-12, 2006. Please make plans to join us on Sunday,
November 12, 2006 for an awesome performance!

What Kids Want in a Youth Leader
You May Already Have What It Takes
Tigen McLuen
Finding the perfect youth
worker has been the task of thousands of church search committees. Of course,
actually finding the perfect youth worker has been the end result of none of
them. Recently, Group Magazine did a survey and posed questions to students
regarding what they are looking for in a youth leader. It is an interesting
idea, and I would like to share some thoughts after reflecting on the data.
