Be a Part of Establishing a New Ministry
Inviting Youth to Go to the EDGE!
TJ Anderson, National Event Director

The place to be is at the EDGE!
EDGE! has been birthed out of the need of Lutheran congregations looking for an Event that would train young people on the importance of the Bible as the true word of God, the importance of a passionate relationship with Jesus Christ, and the need for youth to become active disciples of Jesus in our world.

As we discussed the possibility of the National Youth Event, we sought God’s direction. After a great deal of prayer we came into agreement that God was calling Youth Encounter to start an annual National Youth Event. We believe that God is leading us to have a radically Christ-centered event that calls young people into a transformational relationship with Jesus Christ and then live out that faith in Jesus through service to the world.

Drummers and Sound Techs and Men--Oh My!
Can You Help Fill a Need on a Team?
Jeff Rowdon

Troy Stevenson, drummer for Captive Free North East, rocks out for Jesus!
Well it’s that time of year again—spring break. A time to take a trip somewhere, to get out of the cold and go enjoy the sun. Here in recruitment things are starting to heat up; in fact, they are pretty hot! We have dozens of folks who are currently in the process of applying for team, and we are already so excited about the members that we have called to team.

In the midst of so many great applicants, there are still some areas of need that I wanted to make you aware of as a reader of our e-newsletter. I thought I would take a moment to share about those different areas of need.

Drummers – we love them, we need them, they bang on things. I have often been amazed when I watch a drummer at work. As a guitarist, I always use both hands as I play my instrument, but usually both hands are working in the same rhythm as one another. Being a percussionist is a whole new ball game. You’ve got one hand keeping one beat, the other often keeping another…and don’t even get me started about their feet! I’m amazed at how much percussionists add to the sound of a band. So drummers, I salute you. If you are a drummer who loves Jesus too, or if you know someone like this, please contact me.

Spoke Folk Wants YOU!
Spaces Are Available in All Summer Tours
Eric Arundel

Join a Spoke Folk tour today!
“You don’t have to be a biker stud to go on tour.” This is the phrase that is shared the most by people who have gone on tour before and, trust me, they’re right! Anyone can do just great on tour. You don’t have to be in great shape or be a biker stud or studette. As of right now, all our tours still have space for participants, and every tour has space for counselors.

Just as a reminder, here are the tours this year.

Missouri: June 15-26, 2005
Virginia: June 22 - July 3, 2005
Ohio: June 29 - July 10, 2005
Minnesota: July 13-24, 2005
Colorado: July 27 - August 7, 2005

Looking Back, Looking Ahead
Memories of Events
Jo Barrett

We'll miss you, Jo!
It’s 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, and I have just returned from the one and only Construction Zone that was my responsibility. I’m tired and I need to sleep, but I’m also full of stories that I can’t wait to share. For the past three Event seasons, this is how I have felt after each Event I’ve attended. This year, it’s a little different because I come home knowing that I won’t be going back next year. I’ve decided that it’s time for me to return to New Zealand to hang out with my family and friends and to see what God has in store for me there.

I love my job. At the Events, I get to hang out with some extraordinary youth who continue to amaze me with their faith, youth directors and adult volunteers who astound me with their dedication to their youth, and staff who have shown me such love and passion for youth ministry with their humble hearts. At the Youth Encounter office, I get to work alongside friends who love their jobs just as much as I do (I think) and who offer a loving, caring community that I will miss very much when I’m gone.

A Normal Day In Africa

Cross Fire (in Tanzania)

Cross Fire shares their music and message in Tanzania
Sunday was a good day. We got up early so we'd be ready for worship at 8. Worship was very nice, although it gets a bit frustrating not understand the sermon. Maybe my Kiswahili will keep improving and I'll get the main idea one of these times. After the second service, there was another auction of items brought for offering. I was determined to participate this week! I didn't especially want the chicken or the pig, but I was able to bid on a bunch of bananas. Twenty-seven hundred shillings later (about $2.70 US), I was the proud owner of a big bunch! It was really fun! I gave them to Pastor Wilson who has been our friend, tour guide, caretaker and translator this week. He is quite a man! He's the Secretary-General for the Ulanga-Kilomboro Diocese, has four kids and is the pastor for this parish. His wife is in Mirinyi with one of their kids attending secondary school so she can learn English, so he takes care of the other children with his sister. It's so neat to see how he wants her to have her education so she can have more opportunities and the sacrifices he is willing to make. The bunch of bananas was just a small token of the immense gratitude I have for being able to meet him and spend the week with him. (It was also fun to meet his wife when we were at the secondary school!)

As Good As It Was Hyped Up To Be

Captive Free North East

Sam and Christie help lead a congregation in worship
Ahhhhh! Sunday at the Allentown Quake! Allentown was a happening place on the weekend where 300 junior high guys and gals gathered to praise God, learn more about their relationship with him, and get to know other Christians around the same age. I love Sunday morning of the Quake, apart from the fact that the kids look terribly tired from staying up all night! Sunday morning is the time when the message of the entire weekend comes to a crescendo and everyone has had some time to think about how God is working in their lives. Sunday morning everyone knows all the songs and is just so excited to be able to be together worshipping as a big group.

Sunday morning we also do a mini-concert where we perform songs from our family night program and share some stories from our lives with the kids. I found this Sunday morning to be particularly moving, and I felt like many people really heard our message of how God does care and how he is always here for us no matter what we are going through.

I Had Forgotten About the Holiness of Everything
Read Excerpts from Captive Free West Lakes' Online Journal
Captive Free West Lakes

Rockin' it with West Lakes!
Sometimes on the road, it is easy to fall into a rut and sing songs more out of habit rather than as a prayer. Night after night, you are singing the same songs in generally the same order, and it is easy to shut off the brain and go simply by rote. That is the pattern that I have fallen into lately, and I was not able to find my way out of it. It is not always easy to remember that what we are doing makes an impact when we are out of town by the next morning. When you are the seed scatterer you are not always able to see where the seeds are landing.

This past weekend has been a time of rejuvenation for me. We were at the Indy Quake with about 350 middle schoolers. While there, God did some amazing things through us, the speaker, Natalie Hagen, and the musician, Beth Gearhart. He came in and filled the entire hotel, and we were all blessed by being there.

Interested in Visiting Israel?
Youth Encounter Board Member Leads Tour in November
Rev. Bill Moorhead

Youth Encounter Board member Rev. Bill Moorhead and his wife Martha will be leading their third trip to Israel November 7-16. Their companion, as always, will be Michael Ovikian, an Armenian Christian born and reared in Jerusalem. Mike's experiences in Israel and his stories, beginning notably with being in the King David Hotel in 1946 when it was blown up by terrorists and being nearly executed by firing squad during the Jewish war for independence in 1948 (he ended up in prison for a year instead), will add to this trip in ways with which other trips simply can't compete.
