Event Offering Supports AIDS Orphans in Tanzania
2002-03 Events Benevolence
by Brett Koopman

Each year Youth Encounter’s event ministry supports an international project through the Sunday morning offering given at each Youth Congress and Youth Quake. The project is designed to help youth in need. A total of $47,840 was generously given by the 20,000 youth and adults who attended events during our 2002-2003 season. These gifts were designated for The Children’s Village in Simbani, Tanzania.

In 2000, there was already one million AIDS orphans in Tanzania.  USAID calculated that in 2010 there will be approximately 1.8 Million AIDS orphans in Tanzania if an effective and inexpensive form of treatment is not developed. This means that more than 1 in 10 children under the age of 15 in Tanzania will be orphans.

“This evening we went to a nursing home in Ohio to share music with the people there. I think nursing homes must be one of my favorite places to go. Those we meet there are so honest, inviting, and appreciative of our company. We did three sets of music for three groups of people. After our last set, the director of activities asked if we would mind singing for a resident who was terminally ill and was unable to make it downstairs. She faithfully came to see Captive Free each year, but couldn't make it this time. We were happy to accept the invitation, but nothing could have prepared me for what we were going to experience.

“Surprises. Unexpected events. Small glimpses of God's power and love. Surprises to us, not so surprising to God. Within a week's span, we have had a vast array of experiences. We performed a program for teens on a military base, jammed with a youth group praise band, sang with seniors at an assisted living home, hung out with youth at a juvenile detention center, and now we have quite a bit of relaxing free time here at a Lutheran camp in Pennsylvania. Tonight we head to a church to perform only our second 'family night program', and our first lock-in experience. It's hard to believe that we have only been on the road for two weeks.

Global Work Crew Memories
by Emma Kasiga

Matt Tilmann and the First Lady of Tanzania
In July of 2002, Youth Encounter sponsored four “Side By Side” Global Work Crews, commissioned to aid overseas communities by doing work projects alongside of local youth groups. The following are excerpts from an e-mail by a participant on the Tanzania Crew, as well as a letter in response to the crew’s visit from their host, Esta Maro. In May of 2003, Youth Encounter was thrilled to host Esta at the Annual Youth Encounter Fellowship Dinner, celebrating the continuing relationships that God has formed between various Youth Encounter groups and friends across the globe.

Meet Tangled Blue
Artist's Spotlight
by Youth Encounter

Together, Aimée and Joel Pakan make up the duo, Tangled Blue. In September of 2001 Aimée (formerly Wesolik; Youth Encounter Alumnus of Captive Free 90-91 and 91-92 and New Vision to Australia 96-97) and Joel were married and would soon start performing together as Tangled Blue. With a couple months of touring behind them, the new couple settled into a farm house outside of Menomonie, Wisconsin. Tangled Blue’s first recording was completed in early 2003. Tangled Blue performs throughout the U.S. at churches, coffee shops, colleges, youth gatherings and festivals, sharing their unique “caffeinated folk rock” blend of music. Youth Encounter is pleased to minister alongside of Tangled Blue at three Youth Events this year: Northeast Congress, Cincinnati Quake, and Raleigh Quake. Recently, Aimée took some time to answer some questions about the unique ministry experience of Tangled Blue:
