Australian Honored with Alumni Service Award
Alum continues in a Life of Service
by Hope Dahl

The Benger family
Youth Encounter's Alumni Advisory Board is pleased to announce Lyn (Thiel) Benger as the recipient of the 2002 Alumni Service Award.  This award was announced at the 2002 Team Commissioning Service held on September 13, 2002, and will be awarded to her by the New Vision team as they travel in Australia this spring.

Lyn (Thiel) Benger received both her primary teaching degree and Diploma of Lutheran Education in her homeland of Australia.  She spent about seven years teaching in Lutheran schools in Australia, and was then called to serve on Youth Encounter's Covenant team for the 1987-1988 team year.

Warmth in Winter
News from the Events Division
by Ted Rossing

A Celebration at Pittsburgh Quake!
Tis the season!  Events season, that is!  It’s hard to believe Youth Encounter has already hosted 29 events through the February 14-16, 2003 weekend.  The season is already half over!  It’s amazing how quickly time passes.

As the season began last November, I was excited.  Maybe you, too, were excited.  I was anxious to experience the new use of video clips, PowerPoint and other interactive elements at the events.  Mostly, I was excited to share Christ with youth and watch God minister to them in powerful ways.  However, at my second event I felt like I was cruising on auto pilot.  I just didn’t have that enthusiastic drive I’d had at every event I’d hosted in the past.  Was it because the holidays had just come and gone?  Perhaps.

Greetings from Denmark
Scott Schaffer of Watermark Shares His Experience...So Far!
by Scott Schaffer

Watermark to Denmark, 2002-03: Scott Schaffer, Jeni Bradley, Kevin Gruetter, Doug Mauss, Seth Gibbon, and Kirsten Najbjerg
Inspiration often comes to me in peculiar ways.  February 11th was no exception.  Watermark had traveled via ferry to the island of Børnholm because the rest of Denmark was on winter holiday and we would’ve been hard pressed to find any programs or concerts to play.

Jeni and I were wandering the streets of Aakirkeby in search of peanut butter when I saw it.  As I exited the grocery store and rounded the corner my eyes fell on it.  Few times in my life have I encountered a sight as magnificent as what I saw that February day...

On the Road with CAPTIVE FREE WEST LAKES!
Check Out Their Online Journal!
by Captive Free West Lakes

Captive Free West Lakes: Adam Slagsvol, Kira Ehrlich, Annie Shoen, Nick Campbell, Rikki Dold, and Ryan Clark
“We traveled to Green Bay, Wisconsin for a youth event for about fifty kids. It was great! Most of the kids were from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, so some of the kids that we had seen at our programs back in October were at this event also! What a blessing to see familiar faces and be able to hang out with them again. We had fun going to workshops, leading Worship, doing a couple of programs, and simply being in a hotel with fifty kids! I think my favorite part, though, was being adopted by the youth from Wakefield, Michigan.

A Day in the Life of CAPTIVE FREE SOUTH CENTRAL
Check out Their Online Journal!
by Captive Free South Central

Captive Free South Central ( Becky Cordes, Paul Corey, Liz Hoffer, Shawn Juers, Janet Linden, and Sarah Robinson) make new friends during a weekend retreat
“Today we left Chariton, Iowa after being there almost two full days. While we were in Chariton we met a little girl named Emma. She was a host sister for some of my teammates, but she was a huge blessing to all of us. When we arrived on Tuesday we were able to have dinner with the youth, and Emma was there. At first when we met Emma she was a little shy, but as we spent more time there her smile came out, along with the giggles, and they became infectious.

YOUTH CREATE 2003!
Cathy Pino Dishes on YE's Newest Summer Program
by Cathy Pino

Audri and John jam during Youth Create 2002
Plans for Youth Create are well under way once again as we look ahead to this summer's programs.  What is Youth Create, you ask?  It's a new summer program in which high schoolers join their peers and artists-in-residence to hone their skills as worship leaders and as artists.*

Youth Create got off to a great start in July of 2001 when artists such as Lost And Found, Agape, Crosseyed, Rachel Kurtz, Kjel Alkire, Scott Stivers and Peder Eide and young people from all over the country convened in Minneapolis for a week of workshops. Topics included songwriting, liturgy, and worship leading as well as roundtable discussions on issues such as "The Role of Youth in the Church" and "Sacred and Secular Music."

It's HappyFunTime!
Get the Scoop on Their New Video Premiere!
by HappyFunTime

Last Tuesday evening I sat waiting, sipping a tall mocha latte with extra foam. I was scheduled to meet Minneapolis’ own improv comedy group, HappyFunTime. But they were fashionably late.  I was dabbing my tongue with a piece of ice to cool down the burn I had given myself when I realized that I was a fictitious character; a figment of the minds of the members of HappyFunTime.  This was disappointing, naturally, but I was still determined to find out about this “HappyFunTime Video Premiere.”

Help A FINK Artist
News from our Friends at Faith Inkubators
by Rich Melheim

Some people give up things for Lent. I'm wondering if you might consider giving up seven minutes of your time and a $.37 stamp to help FINK do something absolutely wonderful.
Some of you have seen the marvelous art in our Total Family Advent and Lent PowerPoint presentations. A few of you have even jumped over to visit the artist, Dr. He Qi , at his online gallery at www.heqiarts.com.
I am wondering if all of you would consider assisting us in arranging for Dr. He Qi and his family to immigrate to America?
Here's the scoop…
