Five Teams Begin Their Cross-Cultural Ministry
by Erik Hummel
Now in its 33 rd year of
International Team ministry, Youth Encounter recently sent out five
International Teams (more than any previous year) for their overseas
destinations. New Vision and Cross Fire left on January 13. New
Vision is returning to Victoria and Tasmania in Australia for the first time
since 1993. They are working with the Council for Lutheran Youth of
Victoria and Tasmania – a ministry of the Lutheran Church of Australia.
Cross Fire continues its three-year rotation this year with a visit to the
French-speaking West African countries of Togo, Benin and Cameroon.

“I never knew that I could
hit my high and low for the year so far in one night. We gave a concert at a
lock-in for mostly kids, but there were some families there. I felt like I was
standing up there and my lips were moving but nothing was coming out. I wanted
to cry in the middle of the concert. But there were two boys who stood up and
did every sing-a-long and smiled at me throughout the concert. I went up to
them after the concert and told them how much their enthusiasm meant to me.

“We spent the night at a
Children’s Home tonight and did a program for a few young women there. They all
seemed hesitant to participate in our sing-a-longs at first. I was therefore
not the most energetic at that program and I began to doubt if we were doing
any good. It didn’t even seem like the girls were really enjoying themselves.
Shortly after these thoughts entered my brain, God showed me that we did have a
purpose there.

“Our booking, which was a
family night program, went extremely well. It left us thanking God for that
experience. We learned not to take the wonderful programs for granted. The
first time we gave autographs really showed us that what we say, how we act, and
the manner in which we minister really do speak for us. That is what people
see.
