Listen Carefully
According to a new Harvard Business School study, probably not. The research showed that individuals who are asked a difficult question often evade it, instead answering a question they would rather have been asked. Furthermore, in most cases listeners do not notice the evasion and fail to give negative consequences for it, a phenomenon the researchers called “conversational blindness.” In fact, the listeners in this study preferred a smooth, well-spoken evasive answer to a truthful one spoken by someone who stammered or was awkward. Next time you’re in a meeting or interview, listen attentively for whether the speaker is truly answering the questions that are asked. ___________________________

Winter Water Advisory
Hanging out at the water cooler is often considered a productivity drain, but you might want to encourage it this time of year. Why? For one thing, staying hydrated can help fight colds. More time spent indoors means much more exposure to drier air, which dries out nasal passages and makes them more susceptible to cold viruses. Drinking more water counters the drying effects of indoor air and helps keep nasal passages moist. It also helps keep skin hydrated, preventing irritable itchiness, and fights the winter blahs, since dehydration can lead to fatigue. So tell employees to drink up — and feel healthier. ___________________________
