Love and the Joint Checking Account
by Sally Herigstad
Sure it's all roses and chocolates this week, but what happens next week (or next month or next year) when you and your partner need to make a joint financial decision together? Many couples are in for a few surprises when they start sharing their financial lives. This week's guest column offers three important steps to help you and your partner work together as a team to ensure that, financially at least, things keep coming up roses.

There's a New Woman in the Ivy Lead
Harvard University has, for the first time since its founding in 1636, appointed a woman as president of the university. This comes in the wake of contested arguments over the previous president's comments about women's innate (in)abilities in the math and science fields. Drew Gilpin Faust stated at the news conference, "I hope my appointment can be one symbol of an opportunity that would have been inconceivable even a generation ago." Read more about this here.

Ask Liz
My work wardrobe garners stares. How should I react?
Dear Liz, I have a passion for fashion, but my workplace is definitely more conservative. I've been working here for over two years and have proven myself professionally, but I still get looks from some of my co-workers when I arrive in the office wearing trendier or more fashionable clothing. Last Name Standing
Pinch Me...or Don't
I met my husband when we both worked on a government contract. We dated so discreetly that team members were astonished when we announced our marriage. Our manager told me I should keep my former name because she felt the client would be uncomfortable with having two team members with the same last name. I asked her what would happen if there were others who shared a common last name--should they have to change them? She exclaimed, "That's different," but couldn't tell me how or why. I told her I had decided which name I would go by, and the subject of keeping my former name was never mentioned again. -Velma, CapitolWIT

Harnessing the Power of Ego Involvement
In her column for BusinessWeek Online, workplace expert Liz Ryan talks about engagement. Not the kind with a sparkly ring and wedding bells, but the kind of full involvement that excites employees' intellects, as well as their motivation to contribute. "When employees truly care about what they're doing, beyond the simple need to pay the rent or the mortgage, everybody wins. The work is more fulfilling for employees, and the company gets the best part of its workers' brains and creative juices deployed on its projects." The key for managers is to help keep ideas flowing while keeping the project at hand on track. Here's how.
