Ask Liz
How can I tell my boss I'm not his errand girl?

Dear Liz,
There's a situation at work that's driving me crazy, but I'm not sure what to do about it. The office printer is three steps away from my boss's desk and something like 30 steps away from my desk. Still, my boss asks that I fetch things from the printer for him. He is my boss, but why should I grab stuff for him when it's ten times closer for him? Am I overreacting? How should I respond the next time he asks me to do this?
Yours,
Marnie

Pinch Me...or Don't

I was interviewing a young man for a sales position once. When I asked him why he left his last job, he told me that the company was dishonest, charging customers a fake tax that did not really exist just to make more money. My next quesiton was an affirming, "So you had a problem with this?" And his response was, "Well, yeah. They take the extra money from the customer and they don't share any with the salespeople!" Needless to say, I politely concluded the interview as fast as I could!

Is That Your Final Offer?

After researching, seeking, and interviewing for a new position, getting a job offer can seem like cake. But don't lift that dessert spoon just yet. Liz Ryan, in her BusinessWeek Online column, advises to use the job offer process as a final test of the company you're thinking of joining: "A company considering you for an open position will never like you better—or be willing to show it more—than the day the job offer is extended."
