2007: Year of the Woman?
A recent opinion piece by Cynthia Tucker in the Baltimore Sun examines the rise of women in power positions and the remnants of sexism that women battle still in the United States. While there are growing numbers of women that outshine their male counterparts: Katie Couric, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Nancy Pelosi, Tucker questions whether there really is a rising tide of respect for powerful women, especially compared to the political environment of other nations: "Americans, men and women alike, bring a lingering sexism to their decisions about seats of power, from the pulpit to the presidency." Will 2007 be the Year of the Woman? Read Tucker's editorial for more details and take our Snapshot Survey at right to tell us what you think about the possibility of a female commander in chief in America's future.

Holiday Indiscretion
Pinch Me...or Don't
I work part-time for a mortgage broker. When I asked if we were following the bank holiday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (banks and the government honor this holiday), my boss actually responded, "Why, you're the wrong color anyway." I just wanted to know if I would be able to make plans with my husband who is a federal government employee and had the day off. Unbelievable. -J.D., ChicWIT

The Pay Way
"Sure, there are people who are overpaid and people who are underpaid, but for the most part, a typical corporation doesn't allow wide swings between the pay levels of people doing relatively similar work....employees who fret that their colleagues are earning more than they do are generally wasting their brain cells." In her Ask Careers column WorldWIT's CEO Liz Ryan looks at how to discover if you're earning what you should and how to receive what you're worth.
