This week's guest columnist, Dr. Robert Flower, tells readers how to raise self-awareness at work and open the channels for increased communication and self-advocacy.

Ask Liz
How do I politely say no to the influx of holiday fundraisers?

Dear Liz,
As the holiday season approaches I am getting hit up more and more by co-workers selling gift wrap, cookies and popcorn for holiday school fundraisers. I make the amount that I need to live on and I don't have cash left over for stuff like this. How do I politely say, "No thanks?"
Thanks,
Betsy

Pinch Me...or Don't

I'm currently contracted as the HR Manager at a plant in the northeast for a well-known international food and baking company. I'm the only woman on the leadership team. While at on onsite luncheon with all my co-workers, the plant manager said something very close to: "Do you know what I hate about women managers? They think they have to pound their fists on the table and yell to get their point across!" Everyone at the lunch looked at him in disbelief.

The Third Path
"No one is happy: You're not at ease, and your boss is dismayed. Your manager would love for you to win the lottery and give notice today, but that isn't happening. You've got no real incentive to quit, but neither are you on anyone's short list for Employee of the Year." Does this workplace scenario sound familiar? In her weekly column for BusinessWeek Online, WorldWIT CEO Liz Ryan sheds light on the "third path," a diferent way for unhappy employees and unhappy companies to come together in order to part ways.
