Ask Liz
How can I tell my boss to back off the baby talk?

Dear Liz,
My boss is a sweet lady, but she is getting on my nerves lately, all but asking me when my husband and I plan to start having kids. It started with, "You'd make a terrific mother," and now she's moved on to, "Are you starting to feel your biological clock ticking?" I already have my own mother breathing down my neck and I don't need my boss pestering me too. How do I get her to back off, but nicely?
Yours,
Celeste

The Ad Man Cometh
Pinch Me...or Don't

I own a Liberty Fitness women's health club. I've only been open five months, so needless to say I get called on daily by every type of advertising media sales rep out there. By and large, they're courteous, cautious of overstepping my members' comfort zones, and professional in their appearance. Recently I was in the back of the workout area (there's a privacy wall up front) working with a member, when I hear someone come in the door. Before I had time to even put down the weights and walk toward the front, a 30-something guy in cargo shorts and a t-shirt comes walking right into the workout area, (filled with a sense of entitlement, I suppose) all the way back to where I am with my client and starts pitching me about advertising in his whatever-it-was magazine! When I told him I wasn't interested, he didn't ask for an appointment or use any of the usual tools to try and secure time with me. When he left, my client and I looked at each other as if to say, "Where do these people come from?"

Talk Around the Clock
Unless you live and work in a bubble, you've likely worked with colleagues who take up alot of your time, either through extra-long stories at the watercooler about picking the color scheme for their kitchen or just plain insensitivity to your work schedule. In her blog this week, Mary Olson asks, "How have you handled chatty people at work?" Visit Mary's blog and add your best advice and tips on protecting one's at work time and avoiding overly-conversational co-workers.
