Ask Liz
I turned down an offer. Did I make a mistake?
Dear Liz,
I was given a verbal offer by a company, and told that I had to respond within 24 hours. I turned it down on the spot (having read a lot of your columns on the subject), but now I am having cognitive dissonance. I have two friends who have since joined the company, and like it a lot. Did I make a mistake?
Yours,

A Fields Day
Pinch Me...or Don't
My first job out of college in 1990 was as an engineer at a power plant. I was the only woman on the technical staff, but I didn't mind. A year later, another female engineer arrived. We were extreme opposites and didn't interact much. When a senior VP showed up for a visit a few months after her arrival, he donned a smug smile and asked me how I liked the new engineer. His words were, "Well, we thought that you probably needed someone to talk to about what you bought at (Marshall) Fields, so we got her for you." Believe me, we never talked about shopping! -Lisa, RockyWIT
