The Economics of Time
Communicating Balance Needs
by Kerry Patterson

Time is a scarce resource these days. Granted, there's the same amount of it every day that there's always been, yet it seems like there are more and more activities and responsibilities vying for our attention. Here Kerry Patterson, author of Crucial Conversations, gives advice on how to best communicate and negotiate your time.

Relationship Selling
Selling Skills for Non-Salespeople
by Janet Ryan

For women, it's often a binding point that we can communicate and build relationships as women in sales perhaps differently than men in sales. We all know that relationships are valuable in selling and that it’s important to respect that buyer and develop that relationship. But is it possible to take that rule too far?

Ask Liz
Should I stay in a volatile work environment just to stabilize my resume?

Dear Liz,
I have been at my present job 7 months. I have not worked a full-time job in over 20 years. I graduated from a local college two years ago and had a hard time finding a job in events planning with a bigger company. During the short time I have been with the company, there have been many changes: dress code, new district manager, new manager, new assistant manager, and in-and-out employees. It was suggested from my old manager to start looking because the new assistant that is coming aboard this month will be difficult to work with. If I left the job before a year has past or if I went to part-time status, what would this say to another employer?
Thanks,
Gabriella

The Name Game
Pinch Me...or Don't

Recently at work, I have been having difficulty with an overly controlling supervisor. The supervisor has been undermining me in meetings and taking credit for my work. It has been frustrating and causing me a lot of stress to try and meet her constant-changing instructions. During a recent meeting, the client turned and looked directly at me to ask for my last name. My supervisor, from across the room, cut me off and spelled my last name. The client was taken aback from this obvious rudeness. However, it cured my stress since I now know that my supervisor is not doing things because she thinks I am incompetent, but to hear herself talk. I think I am competent enough to spell my own name.

And the Winners Are...
Only a third of large companies provide a private, secure area where women can express breast milk during the workday, and only seven percent offer on-site or near-site child care, according to a 2005 national study of employers by the Families and Work Institute, a nonprofit organization. WorldWIT’s Rumina Award recognizes those companies that support nursing-mom employees and meet objectives in providing lactation-friendly resources, facilities, and initiatives. We’re thrilled to announce our 2006 Rumina Award winners: PNC Financial Services, WhiteWave Foods and Mothering Magazine. Read the full press release for more information on the winning companies.
