Improving Communication Skills with Emotional Intelligence
by Patricia Schuler
"Today, it is common knowledge that emotional intelligence contributes just as much, if not more, than IQ in today’s world. But how does EI make a difference and how do we use it – in layman’s terms?" Guest columnist Patricia Schuler offers tips on how to improve your emotional intelligence quotient and how to deal with those who haven't got the EI you do.

You Voted!
Last week we asked Thinking Aloud readers to respond to a Chicago Tribune article about the support for and stigmas against breast feeding in public. The majority of readers (70%) said that breast feeding in public is appropriate with suitable coverage, like a blanket. Another 16% of readers voted that breast feeding in public is always appropriate, while 14% of voters said that breast feeding in public is never appropriate. Many readers wrote in and said, "It's only natural!" Stay tuned for more information on breast feeding in public and at the workplace as we gear up to celebrate National Breast Feeding at Work Week, September 4-8, 2006.

Ask Liz
I was undervalued at my last job. How do I handle recommendations?
Dear Liz,
Three years ago I started working at an old, almost bankrupt company that told me they wanted "creative, analytical MBA talent." I got along well with my peers and senior management, had results well above the average, but had a different style than my immediate managers liked. The cube-dwellers/silent-executers fared well, but I didn't. A couple of months later I left the company. Since the official record is either not great or mixed, how do you recommend I handle people asking me for a reference from that employer?

Rough Call
Pinch Me...or Don't
I was working in the aerospace and defense group of a large company when the HQ charm school squad was called in to educate the employees on why it wasn't cool to pinch the bottom of a female sales rep at a corporate meeting. After a day of role-playing and videos, my manager walked up to my desk and said to me in front of several others, that if he hadn't just been through several hours of coaching, he'd tell me I had bedroom eyes. I excused myself from my desk and walked away shaking my head. At one point I told him I was going to send him a dozen roses at home with an incriminating message for his wife to read if he didn't leave me alone. I was told by an older female colleague that I was being too rough on him! -Beth, CapitolWIT

Is Wall Street a Dead End for Women?
A recent article looks at how Wall Street is missing the mark when it comes to meeting women employee's needs and recruiting a diverse workforce. "While many women look to flexible schedules and part-time work to overcome Wall Street's grind, those ideas do not often meld well with around-the-clock client service. The pipeline of new female talent also appears to be stagnating." Take a look at the article. Does Wall Street need a structural and cultural change? What should be done to ensure that women + Wall Street + family doesn't equal early resignation?
