Ask Liz
How can I subtly avoid locker room talk at work?

Dear Liz,
I am the only woman in a very male environment. I love the camaraderie - it's like a peek inside an all-male zone, and the guys are friendly to me. The only thing is that they literally seem to forget I'm here at times, for instance when they're talking about their dates over the weekend. Over the cubicle wall I get the gory details. I think they'd be embarrassed if they realized that I can hear every word. At the same time I don't want to say anything and make it worse. The last thing I want to do is make waves. What's your advice?

Don't Pinch Me!
Pinch Me... or Don't!

My job takes me to places I normally would not go, like liquor stores in seedy areas of town. Last summer, I was in a liquor store that I call on. I set up my computer on the sales counter on the customer side to enter in information. In the middle of my conversation with the manager, a customer reached over, pinched my behind and said, "Nice!" Talk about pinch me or don't! I prefer don't.

by Liz Ryan for BusinessWeek online

"The issue that vexes corporate people in every industry and function, is this: How do I succeed at my job without turning into that spineless character -- a pod person?" Liz Ryan takes on workplace ethics in her recent BusinessWeek Online article.
