Sometimes You Gotta Actually Talk the Talk
Selling Skills for Non-Salespeople
by Janet Ryan
Many of us rely on e-mail to communicate with our business associates and clients on a regular basis. However, sometimes the messages we send get distorted and miscommunications arise. Janet Ryan addresses the benefits of certain communication tools and discusses when it is best to use e-mail and when it would behoove us to pick up the phone and make a call.

Cindy's Coming to Camp WorldWIT!
First, thanks to all of you who have participated in WorldWIT's Link to Us Campaign & Contest! So many of our members have provided information about WorldWIT on their own websites - which will certainly make our network thrive. The winner was Cindy Opong Owner of Creative Assistants in Colorado Springs, Colorado! Cindy chose from a list of possible prizes, including an iPod shuffle, WorldWIT marketing messages, and a free coaching session with Liz Ryan, and ultimately picked a free registration for Camp WorldWIT 2006: Back to Our Nature (www.worldwit.org/Camp). We couldn't be more thrilled to meet Cindy at our third annual, international conference for professional women. Thanks again to all who participated in Linking to Us. See you at Camp, Cindy!

Ask Liz
How do I resign wihout getting booted out the door?
Dear Liz, I am planning to give notice at my job, but I have seen other employees escorted out the door when they gave notice because of the nature of our work. I don't really think that would happen to me because I don't work in a sensitive area, but if it does and if I've set a start date of my new job for two weeks out, I'll be without pay for two weeks. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Chandra

The Logic Gap
Pinch Me... or Don't!
I had a gap in my employment record and the HR professional who was interviewing me for a new job asked about it. I replied that I had moved from another state to take care of my terminally ill mother and had left the work force entirely to be with her during her last few months. I told him that she was deceased and added that the estate was settled, the house was sold, and that I was eager to get back to my career. He looked me straight in the eye and asked, "How do we know that it will not happen again?" Hmm.... -Barbara

They're All the Same
How to Cope with a Cookie-Cutter Manager
by Liz Ryan for BusinessWeek online
In her BusinessWeek online article, Liz Ryan discusses how to identify "cookie cutter managers" and what to do if you have one of these thoughtless leaders on your team. "Such managers, to my mind, are dangerous to an organization. Without regard for external realities, they proceed through a business career implementing the same plan in company after company. Everyone knows someone like this: brimming with confidence, married to their process, bringing their time-tested approach to one employer after another....The problem is that business situations aren't all alike. Every organization's context for action is different. Companies are like snowflakes in that respect -- even in the same industry, no two enterprises are alike."
