Working in Your Pajamas?
Don't Fall for the Romanticization of Working from Home
by Elisa Bethanis

Anybody who reads an online advertisement for working at home may get the impression that it’s a thrill. With titles like “Pajama Jobs,” you’re promised that you won’t have a boss looking over your shoulder. You can work on your patio! Set your own schedule! Do laundry while you work! Get the benefits of a career while you’re home with your family! The truth is, though, working at home is terribly romanticized, even for legitimate opportunities. Work is work! Pinch Me... or Don't

Several years ago my father’s health was failing and I took half-days on Fridays for a few months to make the three hour trip to visit him. I was grateful to be with him at his home when he passed away. I notified my office that I would be away for at least a week to help my siblings wrap up my father’s matters. While my siblings received acknowledgements from their co-workers, my own boss said, “Well, maybe now you will come to work with a lighter step." I was thinking, "A lighter step?! How about you step off!"
