How to Overcome Gender Bias: It's About Character
by Brad Forsythe
Brad Forsythe advises women small business owners on how to fight financial risk with sound assessment and preparation. "Women rank behind men in amounts of accessible bank credit and staggeringly far behind in access to venture capital. Women are falling victim to the “Fifth C” of financial transaction analysis: Character....Because it’s soft, your Character score may say as much about the analyst’s false preconceptions as it does about you. The result, ladies, is that you still have to be a bit better than a man to get the same loan. And for most women, that’s not that hard."

Ask Liz
Dear Liz, I have recently changed industries from financial services to telecom, and I am pretty put off by the degree of "old-boyism" I am experiencing. I have never heard so many "honeys" and "sweeties" in my life directed toward me and my fellow female colleagues. It's well-meaning (not a put-down, as far as I can see), but it's out of place nonetheless. The men my age and younger don't speak this way. It's the men closer to retirement age who can't seem to get it through their heads that that kind of talk is demeaning to women. Any suggestions? Thanks, Charlotte

Add a Story to Your Work History and Watch Your Résumé Stand Out
by Liz Ryan
In her BusinessWeek online column, Liz Ryan reminds résumé-writers to add a little story to their work history. "You want to paint a picture by putting a lot of yourself in your résumé -- not just your degrees and titles, but what drives you and how you managed to get from Point A back in college to wherever you are now."

The International Language of Sexism
Pinch Me.... or Don't!
When I first moved to Paris, I invited a potential client to my home office for a meeting. It was a large company and until this time negotiations had been conducted via e-mail. The meeting went great and it looked like I was about to close the deal until the gentleman I was meeting with said to me in a perfect British accent, "So is this your business or do you just run it for your husband?" Needless to say I didn't get the business. More importantly, I didn't care!

Staying Connected to School Friends: Good. Staying Connected to Work Friends: Very Good.
by Liz Ryan
WorldWIT CEO Liz Ryan addresses the import of corporate alumni networking in her recent E-Prairie online column. "The big pond of contacts that you meet at networking events (which grows as your friends introduce you around) is a wonderful thing. I wouldn’t dis it. That network is silver. The network of people who’ve actually worked with you, spent long nights in the lab, sweated over a sales plan or ridden on countless red-eye flights together is gold. It pays to take very good care of it."
