Some of the Best Marketing Ideas Ever
by Mitzi Crall

The success or failure of most businesses can be tied directly to the effectiveness – or ineffectiveness – of their marketing programs. Yet most business owners have little or no understanding of the factors that make or break a marketing campaign. Often perceived as more art than science, collateral material and promotions are often evaluated on such criteria, as “I like this” or “what will it cost?” rather than objective analysis and what kind of return can be expected.

Selling Skills for Non-Sales People
by Janet Ryan

This week, Janet Ryan answers the questions to a classic sales problem: "What do you do when your idea is cute and everyone loves it, but not very many buy? You have a great idea, you think folks will be enamored, but it just doesn’t sell...How do you drive demand?"

Ask Liz

Dear Liz,
Is there any way to find out if I have been blacklisted? I was downsized from my position as a Technical Writer in July 2003. I took some time off because I was pregnant at the time and had my baby in January 2004. Since March of 2004 I have been sending out resumes like crazy have received many telephone calls but few interviews. I have revised my resume and cover letter several times to comply with all of the best practices that I read about in the employment newsletters and I do get good comments but no job offers. I don't understand what I am doing wrong.

Here's a New (New Year's) Resolution: A New Résumé
by Liz Ryan

Have your New Year's resolutions already fallen to the wayside? If so, "there's one critical to-do item that's best attended to now: Reviewing how your work accomplishments in 2004 advanced your career and enhanced your résumé -- and setting goals for 2005 that will do the same." In her latest Businessweek Online column Liz Ryan, WorldWIT CEO and founder, discusses the need for career-planning that addresses the progress you've made and the progress you'd like to make in the upcoming year. This exercise will not only help you recognize skills learned, it will pinpoint those areas in which you'd like to gain expertise.

No Laughter Policy Cracks Her Up
Pinch Me...or Don't

I have an MBA in accounting and computer science and once worked in the tax department of a major corporation. It was the "Dilbert-like" rabbit warren of cubicles. I have always believed that humor was the better option than insanity and I would laugh and giggle, when appropriate, at the humanity that surrounded me. A fellow co-worker who sat in the cubicle next to me was promoted to head of our department. Shortly after I was called into his new office with my direct manager.

Do You Play the Name Game?
by Liz Ryan

WorldWIT CEO Liz Ryan warns of the dangers of name-dropping in her new ePrairie.com article. "Because it’s so cozy to be well networked, it’s easy to fall into the trap of name-dropping to get where you’re going (to get an interview, to impress a hiring manager or recruiter, or to try and close the sale). For job seekers, it’s about trying to get a job offer in a competitive hiring process." But for all the seeming benefits, this practice has serious downsides as well...
