Six Strategies for Facing Fear
by Gail Sussman Miller
Pam Thomas inspired me this week when she asked WorldWIT members a great question, "How do you stare fear in the face and move beyond it?" As I replied, an article was born! I am a personal and business coach and speaker in Chicago (and a member of ChicWIT). Fear is the number one reason the entrepreneurial women I work with get stuck, procrastinate, avoid risks, and delay acting on a bigger, more fulfilling vision for their life. Heck, fear can stop us from even dreaming of what we really want! The following strategies have been road tested by my clients and me. See what works for you!

Ask Liz
Dear Liz, I'm in the awkward position of watching a business acquaintance on the verge of making a disastrous mistake. "Doug" has landed a huge contract which is far beyond his capabilities and he doesn't know it. Complicating the matter, Doug is the son of the owner, who has even less understanding of the scope of this contract because it represents new territory for the company. Because neither of them did their homework, they bid the contract at a price about half of what it will cost them to perform. I see a train wreck coming. When Doug fails (not "if"!) his Dad will end up in a multi-million dollar lawsuit which could devastate the business. Doug has asked me for some advice on equipment purchases to ramp up for the job. How do I respond to this?

An Example of How to Close the Deal: Finding Funding for a Start-Up
by Janet Ryan
Closing throughout the sales conversation, which we talked about in last week’s Thinking Aloud article, is a concept that’s difficult to grasp for many, especially anyone who has lived in fear of having to ask for the order or otherwise “go for the close”. We’re going to spend some time looking at specific examples; hopefully some of the examples shown over the next several weeks will be close enough to your situation to allow you to incorporate this strategic selling technique into your own natural selling style. (If not, send me some info about the aspect of closing you find challenging, and I’ll address it in a future column).

WorldWIT Wisdom
Thank you so much to those that contributed to this week's tips! Unfortunately, we could not use them all, but there were many great ideas. Perhaps some of you might have some advice or tips on starting a women's network at your office? For example, a summer walking group, summer book club, organized lunches (to discuss a specific topic, or not), movie nights, mentoring program, etc. How did you start it? What does it do for you at the office? Does the company 'recognize' it? If you have tips or advice to share, please email our Director of Communications Kristi Hughes.

WorldWIT Member Observation
As a lover of WorldWIT and ChicWIT -- I pose a question to the members: Thinking beyond the political and historical aspects of Independence Day -- what are we doing to promote Independence among women?
Having marketed both beauty and telecom products and now being the owner of a food company, I have decided that I will not market to women in the traditional ways that corporate America deems worthy. I will not put "Low Carb" or "Low Fat" in my ads. I will not tell women to have low self-esteem and follow the "diet du jour," and I will not tell women that starvation will lead them to happiness.
