Ask Liz
How do I handle being asked an illegal interview question?
Dear Liz, What do you say to someone who asks a blatantly illegal question on a job interview. Like, "Are you married?"
Delia
Dear Delia, You say, "Oh, goodness. It's funny you ask that. I was just at a job interview last week where the interviewer asked me that question, and then as we were talking about marriage, she said, 'Oh wait! I just remembered that I'm not allowed to ask that!' It's incredible how much I've learned about interviewing by being on the other side of the desk." Then be silent. And smile.
Cheers, Liz
