Is it unethical to accept a new job when I've just been promoted?

Dear Liz,
Can I take a new job shortly after being promoted at my old job? I have only been in my new position for three months. But I have been presented with a killer offer from a great company. Help!

Thanks,
Bonnie

Dear Bonnie,
If your question were, "What are the downsides of job-hunting when I've recently accepted a promotion?" I would tell you that prospective employers might look sideways at a candidate who would so quickly bail after being moved up a notch. Then you would need a great story to explain why you aren't staying with the organization that promoted you. But that's not your problem. I see no reason why you shouldn't take the job if you want it. Here's my view: your job as an employee is to do the absolute best job you can, every day that you work for the company. The company's job is to make you happy enough every day to come back to work tomorrow. They have not accomplished that in your case. Move on.

If you get any attitude of the "How could you do this to us?" variety, smile brightly and say, "It was such a hard decision to leave, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity." Best of luck to you Bonnie!

Cheers,
Liz
