Ask Liz
Dear Liz,
I am job seeking and I am having a very consistent experience with each job I apply for. People tell me that my resume is strong. I get to one interview, but I don't get asked back for another. I am afraid that I am not presenting myself well. Some kind souls have offered the advice that my shyness may be hurting me. Do you have any tips for getting to the second round?
Thank you, Belinda
Dear Belinda,
Great timing for your question! I am just back from Camp WorldWIT where we heard from experts (Laura Allen, Joyce Scott, Joan Woods, Janet Ryan and Lorna Owens, among others) on this very topic. You'll be able to see their terrific advice on our website shortly, but for now let me give you the world's shortest distillation of their tips.
Get started on thinking about your 15-second pitch. Visit Laura Allen's 15secondpitch.com for more tips. You may not actually use the verbatim pitch in your interview, but this will prep you to be confident, clear and crisp as you approach the interview situation. Also, think of the interview as a selling situation, because it is. Your 15-second pitch is the lead-in to that sales process. I'm not talking about hard-core selling but rather, about conveying more effectively who you are, what you stand for, and selling the employer on the value of you. You can contact Janet Ryan whose workshop, "At Ease Selling," is geared toward helping non-sales professionals develop their selling style. Janet suggests that you ask a friend (the person who loves you and will tell you the truth) to conduct a mock job interview with you and give you feedback. The person who knows how wonderful you are will tell you where that's not coming through in the interview.
You can reach Laura at laura@15secondpitch.com and Janet at janet@jmryan.com. And watch the www.worldwit.org website and your weekly Thinking Aloud newsletter for more terrific advice on this topic!
Cheers, Liz
