Ask Liz
Dear Liz, I have started, grown and sold two businesses at a profit, and yet I can't get a decent line of credit from any local bank for the new wellness-based business I'm launching. This is crazy and I believe it's because of my gender. How can I get this problem handled?
Neisha Dear Neisha, There are local and state (or provincial) agencies that will respond to complaints about discriminatory lending practices. I encourage you to speak to a representative about your difficulty. (I will send you your local contact in a separate message.) But do keep in mind that your new business concept is not universally beloved or even well understood. Your past computer-leasing and A/V businesses were very concrete, comprehensible opportunities that a typical banker could relate to with no problem. The new business idea goes much further out on a limb, and this undoubtedly is related to your difficulty getting a loan. I'm not trying to discourage you, but banks are about as practical as any lender you might look to. Consider angel funding (there are multiple women-focused angel groups around) for your new venture, too.
Take care, Liz
