Boss From Hell
If you haven't yet read Joyce Scott's column, "Tame the Boss from Hell", you can see it here: http://www.worldwit.org/guest_columns/joyce_bfh_020104.html.  The BFH must be the theme this month because WorldWIT's founder Liz Ryan has made a bunch of TV and radio appearances talking about tips for dealing with difficult bosses.  Here are her top three:

1.  Consider the source.  What makes a boss evil and petty?  Poor self-esteem, most likely.  People who treat other people badly typically don't feel very good about themselves.  A little tolerance can go a long way.

2.  Use humor to deflect sarcastic and patronizing comments.  If your boss says, "I don't know why I hired you in the first place!" you smile and say, "Don't worry you'll never make that mistake again."  Translation: your bluster isn't going to intimidate me, and I can (gently and with good humor) give as good as I get.

3.  Don't undermine the boss.  It's satisfying in a primitive way to make your boss look bad, but it doesn't become you. Stick to the high road and when the company eventually realizes this manager is a turkey, you'll be in a great spot to gain more responsibility.
