Ask Liz
Q. Dear Liz,
How do I deal with requests (in this day and age!) to get the coffee for an executive at a meeting? They're only asking because I'm the only woman in the room. Amy
A. Dear Amy,
Get the coffee the first time. Anyone could be asked to get a cup of coffee. The second time, pause for a second with a quizzical look on your face- and say with a smile, "Am I doing coffee duty? Okay, no problem." The third time, say "We've got to stop our little coffee routine. I must be too good at making coffee and I'm missing the first third of our meetings!" with a smile. After the third time, go to your boss and say "I don't want to embarrass you or anyone else in that meeting. Please figure out how to get that executive to stop asking me to do coffee service. I am in the meeting to participate and represent the marketing department. I've been very good-natured about this, but it needs to stop." He should take care of it. If not, the next time you're asked to serve, say to your boss, "George? What did we work out about Joe's coffee?" and wait for his answer. You're giving everyone the benefit of the doubt but it has to end.
Cheers- Liz
