Go Clubbing in Southern California
There’s a social group or organization for every pastime.

Social organizations are a great way to mix and mingle while enjoying a hobby or interest, and in California’s southern region, there’s no shortage of clubs to keep you busy.

The San Diego Rowing Club was first formed in the 19th century and today, boasts hundreds of members and a number of successful programs. The club invites members of all ages and skill levels to enjoy the beautiful waters of the West Coast while socializing with friends. The group calls Garty Pavilion home and hosts several events there throughout the year. Young rowers will love being a Junior Crew member, and they’ll learn new skills from seasoned pros. For those with more experience, Masters rowing offers challenging competition. Check out the Long Beach Invitational in late April and the Beginning Adult Sculling Session in early May. View photos and the San Diego Rowing Club calendar at www.sandiegorowing.org.

Established in 1909, the California Art Club (CAC) is a nonprofit organization committed to art education and appreciation. Everyone, from professional artists to those who can barely draw a stick figure, is welcome to join; membership includes invitations to special exhibits, openings, lectures, museum tours, workshops and more. Recent events include a tour of the Frederick R. Weisman Museum in Malibu and a lecture and demo by the accomplished painter Quang Ho. Don’t miss the 101st Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition in April. Find out how to become a member of this prestigious organization at www.californiaartclub.org.

The Los Angeles Chess Club (LACC) is one of the most active chess clubs in America, offering weekly tournaments and lectures that attract a variety of players. The group meets at the Barrington Bridge Club, and members receive free admission to novice and advanced classes, game analysis by LACC directors, access to instructional books and videos from the club’s library and discounted entry fees for all tournaments. Group classes and private lessons are also available. Chess lovers know that the LA Masters Tournament each Saturday and the Swiss Tournament every Sunday are always events not to miss, so be sure to get in on the action. Visit the Los Angeles Chess Club online at www.lachessclub.com.

Southern California is full of enthusiastic residents who love to get together. Become a member of a club that piques your interest and you’ll always have a full calendar.
