2014 Volvo XC90 Earns TOP SAFETY PICK+ in IIHS Crash Tests

ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (Nov. 6, 2013) – In a testament to Volvo’s longtime commitment to passenger protection, the 2014 Volvo XC90 luxury SUV earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Institute’s top safety award.

To earn TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must pass a series of crashworthiness evaluations, including the small overlap front test — a real-life scenario that replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or an object.

Volvo S60 chosen as IIHS Top Safety Pick+

ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (December 31, 2012) - The Volvo S60 sports sedan can add another award to its list of accolades after the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced the winners of their new Top Safety Pick+ awards.

IIHS created the Top Safety Pick+ award to recognize good or acceptable performance in the new small overlap collision test. The S60 is one of two midsize luxury vehicles to currently earn the Top Safety Pick+ award.

Volvo S80 Sedan Awarded 2014 IIHS Top Safety Pick+

ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (Dec. 19, 2013) – The Volvo S80 sedan has earned a 2014 Top Safety Pick+ accolade from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Previously, the Volvo S60, XC60 and XC90 received a 2013 Top Safety Pick+ award, when IIHS extended its scope by integrating the small overlap test in 2012.

The S80 Top Safety Pick+ results include good performance in the small overlap front test, which replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or object, such as a tree or utility pole – a very severe crash situation. In the test, 25 percent of the front end on the driver’s side strikes a five-foot-high rigid barrier at 40 mph.

Volvo S60 Sedan and XC60 Crossover Earn ‘Superior’ Rating in New IIHS Test of Front Crash Prevention Systems

ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (Sept. 27, 2013) – Volvo’s S60 and XC60 received a rating of “superior” in a newly developed testing program of front crash-prevention systems conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for cars equipped with auto brake and forward collision warning. Among the 74 moderately priced and luxury midsize cars and SUVs tested, Volvo’s City Safety was the only low-speed crash prevention system in the test offered as standard.

Volvo XC60 is the First Luxury SUV to Achieve a Top Safety Pick+ Award

ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (March 7, 2013) - The 2013 Volvo XC60 earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) new small overlap frontal crash test, currently making it the first and only midsize luxury SUV to achieve such results.

Thanks to its top marks in the latest test, Volvo is now the only luxury manufacturer with two TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicles. The 2013 Volvo S60 sports sedan received the Institute's highest safety honor in an earlier test.

Insurance Claim Analysis: Volvo City Safety System Prevents Collisions

ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (July 19, 2011) - A newly published analysis from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) indicates that Volvo XC60s get into fewer low-speed crashes than comparable vehicles thanks to Volvo's City Safety technology, a standard feature on all XC60s.

HLDI examined claim frequency under property damage liability, bodily injury liability and collisions. Their data concluded frequency rates for the XC60 were lower than all other midsize luxury SUVs, specifically:

  • Claims under property damage liability coverage were filed 27 percent less often for the XC60 than other midsize luxury SUVs.
  • Claim frequencies for injuries for the XC60 were filed about half as often compared to other midsize luxury SUVs.
  • Collision claim frequencies for the XC60 were 22 percent lower than all other midsize luxury SUVs.

Volvo S60 and V60 get five star safety ratings in Europe and the United States

Volvo Car Corporation's safety leadership is once again confirmed by full star results on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Volvo V60 received five stars and is named best car in the Large Family category in the 2011 Euro-NCAP rating.
In the United States, the Volvo S60 achieved an overall five star NHTSA crash test rating.

Volvo XC60 Receives Top Safety Honors from NHTSA and IIHS

ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (Jan. 21, 2011) - It happens in an instant. The light turns green and you ease your Volvo XC60 into the intersection. The impact is bone jarring, monstrous. The screech of tires, the explosion of the side air curtain, the hollow thud of steel on steel, and the sideways movement that feels so unnatural.

Then silence.

Shattered glass lies in tiny fragments everywhere; the hood of the other vehicle is pressed firmly into the driver's side door. Gas from the side air curtain gently flows out of the passenger compartment. Your ears are ringing.

The baby!

Quickly checking the rearview mirror, you see him securely held in place within his car seat, cooing and looking around. In the front passenger seat is your teenage daughter. Her eyes are as large as her baby brother's. Both children are unhurt and so are you.

It's been said that Volvo vehicles are designed for the worst day of your life. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently agreed and awarded the new 2011 Volvo XC60 their top accolades for driver and passenger protection after a series of frontal and side crash tests.

Global safety rating results confirm Volvo Cars' safety leadership
Every year is a safety year at Volvo Cars. The company is working towards the vision that by 2020, nobody should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo - and data from independent rating institutes all over the world emphasise and reinforce this life-saving philosophy. The most recent results are a Top Safety Pick+ for both the Volvo S60 and XC60 in the United States and an outstanding Best in Class ranking for the all-new Volvo V40 in the Euro NCAP summary for 2012.

"Viewed together, all the top ratings during the past year emphasise our world-leading position in automotive safety. We are very proud to offer consumers some of the world's safest cars," says Prof. Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Specialist Safety at Volvo Cars Safety Centre.
