USAT NATIONAL AND REGIONAL ELECTIONS UNDERWAY
by USAT Mid-Atlantic Region

Within the last week, all USAT members should have received ballots in the mail  to elect a Mid-Atlantic representative to the USA Triathlon National Board of Directors, to elect our USAT-MA Regional Board representatives, and to vote on three USAT referendums.

The candidates running to represent the Mid-Atlantic Region on the National Board are Chuck Graziano of New Jersey and Melissa Merson of Virginia.  The candidates' platforms and more information about the election are on the USAT website at:

http://www.usatriathlon.org/Pages/2006_board_elections_intro.htm

Information about the Regional Board elections and the referendums, including a discussion of the pro's and con's of each referendum, can also be accessed from the webpage.

We urge all of our members to vote by simply marking the three ballots and returning them in the postage-paid envelope. Questions about the election can be directed to USAT Mid-Atlantic Regional President Rob Vigorito at rvigorito@usat-ma.org

SCIENCE OF SPEED
by Dan Moser, PhD and Jeff Devlin

Since many of you are hoping to peak for your final big race of the season, we thought that it would be a perfect time to talk about the taper.
The reason for tapering is to prevent overtraining, staleness and injury before the designated race. The natural tendency of highly motivated athletes is to drive hard right up till game time. However, this often leads to a “flat” or sub-par race performance.
This month, the science of speed looks as various tapering strategies and helps you pick one that is right for YOU!
The science of speed combines two expert perspectives on seasonal triathlon testing, training, and racing and is sponsored by ELITE Testing (a division of ELITE Health & Wellness) (http://www.elitetesting.com), located in Philadelphia.
