REGIONAL ATHLETES TO BIKE ACROSS U.S. TO RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENESS

Two Mid-Maryland Tri Club members, Patrick Blair and Adam Driscoll, will be biking across the country in June, July, and August 2006 on fixed gear, single speed, road bikes to raise funds and awareness for the American Diabetes Association and Kupenda for the Children, an organization whose mission Blair describes as “helping special needs children in Africa.” It will be close to 6,000 miles when they conclude their ride in Ocean City, Maryland on September 3rd. Blair and Driscoll will be riding on behalf of Adventures for the Cure. “BEST OF THE US” INVITES VIRGINIA’S & D.C.’S BEST TO RACE AT THE
by Jerry MacNeil

“Best of the US” Management and Set-Up Inc. invite the triathletes of Virginia and Washington DC to race at the 2nd annual KINETIC SPRINT / BEST OF THE US VIRGINIA QUALIFIER at Lake Anna State Park near Spotsylvania on April 23. In 2005, DC athletes competed with Maryland athletes.

Virginia was well-represented at the “Best of the US Championship” last year. Michael Harlow and Margie Shapiro, placed 6th in the Fastest State Competition. Harlow, a rising young star, finished 22nd in the men’s race; Shapiro thoroughly dominated the women’s contest, winning by 1:43. Shapiro was later named US Female Triathlete of the Year by USA Triathlon, Inside triathlon, Triathlete and Midwest Events Magazine. After winning the ITU World Championships last fall, Shapiro entered the pro ranks. Though Shapiro will be missed this year, Virginia can still be expected to send a very strong team to Minnesota.

THE SCIENCE OF SPEED

by Dan Moser, Ph.D. & Jeff Devlin

With the cold weather now behind us (hopefully!) and the racing schedule generally mapped out, everyone is in full gear training for that first benchmark race. How do you think you may measure up to last year’s performances? This month, the science of speed looks at an interesting study that investigated which physiological measurements best correlated with Olympic distance triathlon times. The science of speed combines two expert perspectives on seasonal triathlon testing, training, and racing and is sponsored by ELITE Testing (a division of ELITE Health & Wellness) (http://www.elitetesting.com), located in Philadelphia.
