AT THE RACES
by Bob Mina
Each month,
“Hurricane” Bob Mina joins us to preview a race scheduled to occur in the
Mid-Atlantic Region. This month, Bob
previews the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon and the Lums Pond Triathlon and Duathlon.
We’ll
start off with a race that borders on the definition of a classic in these
parts, the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon on August 8 th in
Wilkes-Barre, PA ( http://www.wilkesbarretriathlon.com). This is one of the oldest races in the
country – this will be the 23 rd edition. The staff knows what
they’re doing from top to bottom, and it shines through every year.

TALKING NUTRITION
by Tara DeSorbo, R.D.
Tara L. DeSorbo, R.D. joins us each
month to answer your nutrition questions. If you have a question that you
would like to see answered by Tara in this newsletter, please e-mail her at nutritionalhs@hotmail.com.
Q: I am a 39 year old female in my fourth year
of triathlons. I have been a distance
runner since high school. When I
compete at Olympic distance and half iron man races, I get lower GI distress
during the run. It can also happen
during a half marathon. It seems
exacerbated by the heat. If I slow
down, the discomfort lessens, but comes back if I speed up. I rarely get it training, and only then
during long runs on hot days. I have
not noticed any relation to what I eat or drink while training and racing. What can I do to prevent this?
I hope you
can help with this, because at this point I am quite discouraged about
competing.
