REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNOUNCED FOR 2004

The Mid-Atlantic Region has selected its championship races for 2004. Registration for these events is either currently open or will open shortly. If you plan on participating in any of these events, be sure to sign up early. Judging from last year, they will fill up quickly. For the complete list of regional championships, read on.

MID-ATLANTIC FEMALE TAKES OVERALL TITLE AT IRON DISTANCE RACE

For the first time since the inaugural Ironman competition 25 years ago, a woman has won an iron-distance race overall. And this was not just any iron-distance race. The Odyssey Off-Road Iron Triathlon takes the traditional iron-distance race from the pavement to the trails.  The Mid-Atlantic Region’s Kristen Eddy (Reston, VA) took top honors overall all in a time of 17 hours and 12 minutes.

CANADIANS RULE THE DAY IN KONA

The Canadians ruled the day in Kona, as Peter Reid and Lori Bowden took top honors at the 2004 Ironman Triathlon World Championships held in Kona, Hawaii on October 18, 2003. Although both are repeat winners, Reid’s last victory was back in 2000 and Bowden’s last victory was in 1999.

USA TRIATHLON NATIONAL AGE-GROUP CHAMPIONSHIP

Approximately 1,250 triathletes participated in the USA Triathlon Age Group Triathlon National Championship held on Saturday, October 4, 2003,in Shreveport, Louisiana.  The top finisher from the Mid-Atlantic Region was Bill Reeves (Durham, N.C.).  Reeves finished fifth overall.  Dave McNeeley (Glen Arm, Md.), also from the Mid-Atlantic Region, won the men’s 60-64 age group.
