LONGTIME TRIATHLETE PASSES AWAY
Long-time
Team USA member Jerry Kenney passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2003, at the age
of 77 years old. Kenney suffered an apparent heart attack as he prepared for
his regular morning swim in a Jersey City pool. Kenney was a frequent and successful participant in long course
triathlon events. Just two weeks before
he passed away, on July 13, 2003, Kenney had a terrific race at the Muncie
Endurathon, which served as the 2003 USAT Long Course Championships. He completed that half-iron distance event
in a time of 6:55:23.
Born
in New York and a third-generation employee of New York Daily News, Kenney
joined the paper as a copy boy in 1950 and worked his way up to outdoors
columnist. Before joining The News, he
served with the U.S. Navy in World War II, and was a member of the crew of a
landing ship tank that brought American soldiers to Normandy Beach on D-day.
Kenney
is survived by his wife, Alexandra son, Kevin, a daughter, Barbara, and two
grandchildren.
A
memorial fund has been established in Kenny’s name to provide financial
assistance to senior athletes who compete in multisport events. Contributions may be made to the Jerry
Kenney Senior Fund, care of the Columbia Triathlon Association. Contact information for the Columbia
Triathlon Association may be found at www.tricolumbia.org.
