WATSON AND TYNAN CRUISE TO VICTORY AT BRANDYWINE VALLEY DUATHLON
BVD Winners Watson & Tynan
The 2003 Greater Atlantic Multisport Series got off to an exciting start on April 12th.  Just two weeks after winning Powerman Alabama, four-time US Duathlon National Champion Greg Watson dominated the field at the inaugural Brandywine Valley Duathlon (5k run/30k bike/5k run) held in Delaware City, Del.  Watson, 36, from Newark, Del., recorded the fastest splits of the day in all three legs of the race.  His finishing time of 1 hour, 19 minutes and 6 seconds put him close to three minutes ahead of the next fastest competitor.

Action News (WPVI-TV Philadelphia) meteorologist Cecily Tynan captured her first victory as a professional duathlete, taking top female honors.  Tynan, 34, led a strong women’s field from start to finish, completing the course in a time of 1:31:25.

YOUTH TRIATHLON COMING TO MID-ATLANTIC REGION

Kids from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland now have a triathlon they can call their own.  The 1st Annual Escape From School Youth Triathlon will take place on Saturday, May 31st at Lums Pond State Park in Bear, Delaware.  The park is conveniently located 15-minutes south of Wilmington.

The Escape From School race is a great way for kids to celebrate the end of a long school year and for parents to expose their children to a sport that encourages an active and healthy lifestyle.

The triathlon, which is open to youths between the ages of 7 and 13, will consist of a 100-yard swim, followed by a 3-mile bike and a 0.4-mile run.   There will also be a 0.4 mile fun run for youths between the ages 3 and 13.

Both races will feature state-of-the-art, computerized chip timing by Lin-Mark Computer Sports and digital race photography by MyRaceDay.com.  All participants will receive a t-shirt, finisher’s medal and refreshments.

To register for the Escape From School Youth Triathlon and fun run, visit www.piranha-sports.com.

AT THE RACES

I’ve heard from a very good source that winter is nearly over up here. I swear. Yeah, I know there was snow falling from the sky only 2 weeks ago, but I can assure you that rumors of Columbia Triathlon Race Director Rob Vigorito pricing out icebreakers for the traditional late May race weekend from the Coast Guard are completely false.

THE SCIENCE OF SPEED

In a previous article we briefly mentioned power measuring devices for cycling and alluded to a future article on what exactly power is and why it is something you should consider as a training tool.   We had intended to go through a big technical explanation of the physics of cycling and power, work, velocity, etc., but after thinking about it some more, we decided to keep it simple.

The science of speed combines two expert perspectives on seasonal triathlon testing, training, and racing and is sponsored by ELITE Testing (a division of ELITE Health & Wellness) (http://www.elitetesting.com), located in Philadelphia.
