AT THE RACES
Fall Marathon Preview
by Bob Mina
November, huh? Well, welcome to the beginning of your
off-season! Doesn’t sound like much
reason to celebrate, but don’t worry about it.
Sure the days get shorter, the air gets colder, and it means it’s now
time to think about getting to know your trainer and your basement walls again,
but I’d be willing to bet that most of us need the break (even if we really
don’t want it – you know, that whole “Type A Triathlete’s don’t take days off”
thing).
So what can you do with
yourself? Maybe you’ve got all this
fitness from a good summer, or maybe you’re like me and you’re still waiting
for UPS to show up with it. Either way
there’s still plenty of racing left before the holidays – it’s marathon season!
This month, Hurricane Bob
takes a look at the New York City
Marathon, Suntrust Richmond Marathon, Montgomery County Marathon in the Parks, and
Philadelphia Marathon

THE SCIENCE OF SPEED
A Check Up From The Neck Up
http://www.elitetesting.com
by Dan Moser, Ph.D. & Jeff Devlin
A check up from the neck up?
As the season draws to a
close, there is much to reflect upon.
Surely there are many reasons for doing this, like channeling energy in
a positive and productive direction, but perhaps the greatest reason is to acknowledge
how fortunate we have been. In the end,
it really isn't about how fast, what place, or what prize, it is about being the best that you can be. Regardless of our desired race lengths, we
all share a very unique appreciation for this goal, and that is why it is so
important to keep it in sight. Yes,
compared to world peace, famine, and poverty, these races are stupid, contrived
and self indulgent, but that is not the point.
The point is that though not everyone out there gets it, we do, and that makes us all the winners.
This month, the science of speed looks at the real value in the lifestyle that we all
share.
The science of speed combines two
expert perspectives on seasonal triathlon testing, training, and racing and is
sponsored by ELITE Testing (a division of ELITE Health & Wellness) (http://www.elitetesting.com), located
in Philadelphia.

JUDY FLANNERY DOCUMENTARY WINS AWARD
Judy's Time, the documentary about the late triathlete Judy Flannery, was among seven films taking top honors in the annual IDA Distinguished Documentary Achievement Awards competition. The film is a moving and humorous documentary about a woman’s spectacular midlife transformation from homemaker to four-time world champion masters triathlete.
At 38, Flannery—a mother of five from Maryland—began jogging, worked her way up to marathons and eventually the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon.
Tragically killed at the peak of her career when an out-of-control car struck her bicycle, 57-year-old Flannery was a source of inspiration for other athletes and an outstanding member of her community.
