THE SCIENCE OF SPEED
A Training Calendar
http://www.elitetesting.com

Now you are really into your competitive season, with at least a sprint or Olympic distance triathlon or maybe a marathon under your belt.  If the concept of heart rate (HR) training described in last month’s article was new to you, don’t worry, there is still plenty of time left to put technology to use and reap the rewards of better training through science.  For you who have been training with HR monitors for years, we hope you were able to fine-tune some of your workouts.  Now that you all have an understanding of the intensities involved in aerobic, lactate threshold, VO2, and anaerobic training (see last month’s article at http://www.imakenews.com/usatma/index.cfm?archive=T), this month we want to help you plan a viable training calendar for peaking at the right time.

The science of speed combines two expert perspectives on seasonal triathlon testing, training, and racing and is sponsored by ELITE Testing (a division of ELITE Health & Wellness) (http://www.elitetesting.com), located in Philadelphia.

AT THE RACES
Regional Potpourri

Hurricane Bob Mina It’s already July? Where the heck has the season gone? Just a few months ago I was whining about my spare tire, and here we are in the thick of the summer season now! Of course, I still have that spare tire, but there’s something about 90° weather and 80% humidity that just makes it go bye-bye in a few weeks, so I’ll let it be for now. One of the problems the summer brings about (although it’s a problem like having too much ice-cream in your freezer is a problem) is that there are races nearly every weekend. You could point your browser to Lin-Mark and find a race every single weekend until September! How can you decide which one’s to do? I couldn’t either, so you’re getting all of them for July in one swell foop. Call me indecisive, call me lazy, call me Joan (wait, no – not Joan. Nevermind), but there was just no way I could pick one race and do all the others justice, so read on – there’s so much you could be doing!

LeBRUN, ERLANK VICTORIOUS AT NISSAN XTERRA EAST CHAMPIONSHIP

XTERRA East Champion Nicolas LeBrun Nicolas LeBrun (Digne, France) used a remarkable run to capture the 4th annual Nissan Xterra East Championship overall title in Richmond, Va. on June 23rd. The off-road multisport race - first of four national championship events boasting a $125,000 pro purse - consisted of a 1-kilometer swim, 27-kilometer mountain bike and 10-kilometer trail run. Reigning XTERRA World Champion Anke Erlank (Stellenbosch, South Africa) won the women’s race by a convincing five-minute margin.

GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR JUNIOR & UNDER-23 TRIATHLETES

Jack Bianchi, a duathlete and owner of Bianchi Motors in Santa Barbara, Calif., has made a philanthropic contribution to the USA Triathlon Development Program. His contribution has been earmarked to provide grants to underprivileged junior and under-23 triathletes.

These grants are meant to cover a portion of the travel and race expenses for triathletes wishing to participate in one or more races in the USAT Junior and U-23 National Triathlon Series, including the National Championship in New Hampshire.

If you know young triathletes not otherwise financially able to make it to these races, please have them contact Ric Rosenkranz for a grant application: ric@usatriathlon.org or (888) 841-7995 x4222.
