PENNSYLVANIA TRIATHLETE TO RACE FOR SLAIN POLICE OFFICER'S CHILDREN'S FUND
When Pennsylvania triathlete Steve Brown read of a local police officer's tragic shooting death this past January, it hit home hard. Like Brown, the officer was in his early forties, grew up in Greater Philadelphia, had two children and was an avid fitness enthusiast and runner who spoke often about marathons.
Brown felt the need to do something for the officer and his family.

AT THE RACES
Blackwater Eagleman Race Preview
by Bob Mina
Allow me
to start this month’s At The Races column with a profile, if I may. The following is a graph of the complete
elevation profile for the Blackwater Eagleman Triathlon:

SWIM BIKE
RUN
Have
people told you this race is flat?
They’ve lied. It’s beyond
flat. It’s flatter than flat. It’s so flat, even the wind knows that once
it leaves the Choptank River behind it need not change direction until it hits
the Beltway. That’s what gives this
race its unmistakable character – the wide-open spaces of the Blackwater
Wildlife Refuge. It’s where many
Ironman dreams go, and only a few come out intact.
This
month, Hurricane Bob previews the Mid-Atlantic region’s only Ironman
qualifier….the Blackwater Eagleman Triathlon.

THE SCIENCE OF SPEED
Stop Working Out, Start Training
http://www.elitetesting.com
by Dan Moser, Ph.D. & Jeff Devlin
By design,
multisport competition is complex. Whether you are preparing for a sprint or an
Ironman-distance race, developing fitness in three separate disciplines is
difficult. Time is both an ally and an enemy in the battle between optimizing
conditioning and preventing injury. Achieving the best results requires a plan,
and in this way it is possible to stop just "working out", and start
training... with purpose.
This month,
we will focus on how to interpret the results of a lactate threshold or ventilatory
threshold test to set accurate training intensities and maximize the benefits
of your hard work.
The science
of speed combines two expert perspectives on seasonal triathlon testing,
training, and racing and is sponsored by ELITE Testing (a division of ELITE
Health & Wellness) ( http://www.elitetesting.com),
located in Philadelphia.

THE KICKSTAND COACH
by Alicia Wright Colopy, MA, MPH
In April of 1988, my bike was stolen out of my garage. I was disappointed but I had a recent race photo that allowed my insurance to cover all my extras like toe clips and a seat pad. It was a Puch 10 speed that I had had since college. I loved that bike, but it was gone.
For Mother’s day that year my husband gave me a new Nishiki. It cost $650. I was totally amazed with this beautiful piece of equipment. But then, I realized it didn’t have a kickstand. How could this expensive bike not have a kickstand? Wasn’t that standard equipment?
