AT THE RACES
Columbia Triathlon

The Columbia Triathlon will always hold a special place in my heart. It was there in 1996 that I first stepped down a damp, slick, starting ramp into a freezing lake at 7:30am, and left all doubts about what was possible behind me. It was my first ever triathlon, and I’ve loved going back there ever since. It’s like a homecoming of sorts – it’s where it all began for me. If you’ve raced Columbia then you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t yet and this will be your first time, are you in for a treat! Columbia is one of the most well run races in the country. It’s up there with an Ironman – it’s that good. Race Director Robert Vigorito (Vigo) has set the standard to which most other races strive for, as evidenced by Columbia’s selection as host for USAT Age Group Nationals in 1994 and 1997. This month, Bob Mina offers a preview of the Columbia Triathlon, a regional race with a national reputation.

THE SCIENCE OF SPEED
Common Athletic Physiology Terms
http://www.elitetesting.com

As the season approaches, and talk turns to shaving legs, Body Glide and Pam, you may also hear your friends talk about things like VO2 max, VO2 max pace, lactate threshold, or anaerobic threshold.  If you find your head spinning from all this scientific terminology or just want to know how these principles can help you get faster, then be sure to read this month’s column which reviews common athletic physiology terms.

The science of speed combines two expert perspectives on seasonal triathlon testing, training, and racing and is sponsored by ELITE Testing (a division of ELITE Health & Wellness) (http://www.elitetesting.com), located in Philadelphia.

REGIONAL TRIATHLETES WIN BIG IN THE LOTTERY!
Ironman Triathlon While not winners in the recent $300 million Big Game Lottery, to some, these 22 lucky individuals from the region have scored an even bigger prize. The Ironman Triathlon World Championship selects 200 athletes each year to participate in the race through a lottery system. One hundred and fifty of the athletes are selected from the United States and the remaining fifty are selected from other countries. As qualifying gets more difficult each year, many athletes look to the lottery as their only chance for a ticket to the Big Dance. Read on to see who’s packing their bags for Kona.

USA TRIATHLON MEMBERSHIP SURGES
As of March 26, 9,162 individuals had applied for annual membership to USA Triathlon. That number compares to 6,336 in 2001. The 2,826-member increase is a 30.8 percent increase from this date in 2001.

That number is impressive when one considers that 2001 was a record year for USA Triathlon. In 2001, 29,886 individuals became annual members of the organization. Adding on the carry-over members from 2000, USA Triathlon 2001 annual membership was 32,866.

USAT hopes to grow its membership to 40,000 this year. At our current rate, that goal will be achieved easily.

For those of you thinking about joining USAT, now is the time to do it.  United Airlines has provided USAT with a limited number of bike fee waivers to be given to annual members.  These vouchers, valued at $150, entitle members to ship their bikes free of charge on flights booked on United Airlines.

The vouchers are available to both new members and those renewing an existing membership.  However, supplies are limited, so be sure to sign up for your USAT membership TODAY!  You can register online by visiting http://www.usatriathlon.org/Frames/fs_membership.htm.
