http://www.elitetesting.com

This new monthly column is about maximizing human performance by combining the science of exercise physiology and the practical application of endurance coaching.  The science of speed combines two expert perspectives on seasonal triathlon testing, training, and racing and is sponsored by ELITE Testing (a division of ELITE Health & Wellness) (http://www.elitetesting.com), located in Philadelphia. We are confident that the marriage of "science and coaching" will prove to be a winning combination for this column aimed at educating triathletes at all levels on the value of athletic testing and the practical application of exercise physiology to maximize training strategies.

I EAT THEIR DUST
Nutrition for Our Spirit

As a triathlete and a Triathlon Youth Coach, I am always immersed in conversations about nutrition to improve performance. What does an athlete eat to train more effectively, race faster and recover quicker? What nutrition bar is the best to help the competitor meet or beat their race personal best? As I look at all the eager young faces, looking at me, searching for answers that not only will feed their minds but their bodies, all I can say is .. I eat their dust.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS FILLING QUICKLY

The USA Triathlon National Age Group Qualifier to be held on June 15th in Lake Placid, NY, has close to 300 athletes already registered. The Lake Placid event will qualify athletes for slots on Team USA for the 2002 ITU Triathlon World Championship. That race will be Nov. 9-10 in Cancun, Mexico. Seven slots per age group are still available. Event information is posted at www.lakeplacid.com/triathlon. To register online, visit www.signmeupsports.com/12046.
The USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship will be held over Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31) in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The Coeur d'Alene race will qualify athletes for Team USA in 2003 to compete in the ITU Queensland World Championship in New Zealand. To date, 96 athletes have registered for this event, which has a very challenging course. Ten slots per age group will be awarded through Coeur d'Alene for the 2003 World Championship. MRS. T'S RACE FILLING QUICKLY
Mrs. T's Chicago Triathlon

For those of you planning to race the popular Mrs. T's Chicago Triathlon (August 25), please note that there are only 1,600 slots remaining for the race. That might sound like plenty of room, but the race accepts  more than 6,300 people, meaning it's already over two-thirds full.

Registration for the race opened in mid-January and is expected to fill sometime in early April, 30-45 days earlier than it did last year.

The race is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.  To celebrate 20 years of successful racing, the prize purse has been expanded from $40,000 to $50,000, the pro awards have been moved to right after the finish of the pro race, and more food and a new beer will be offered at the post-race party.

Online registration and more information can be found at http://www.caprievents.com.
