NEW USAT PRESIDENT HAILS FROM MID-ATLANTIC REGION: RAY PLOTECIA ELECTED TO HEAD NATIONAL TRIATHLON FEDERATION
Ray Plotecia, a long-time triathlete and both regional and national triathlon federation official in February was elected president of triathlon’s national governing body, USA Triathlon. Plotecia, from Towson, MD, has had a distinguished career in triathlon and has raced at every distance from the sprint to the Ironman while also contributing to the administrative end of the sport.

MARYLAND TRIATHLETE STARTS SEASON WITH TWO VICTORIES
2001 USA Triathlon elite triathlon rookie of the year, Desiree Ficker launched her 2002 duathlon season with a great start March 10th by winning the Dannon Duathlon race series opener in Haines City, Fla. She followed that up two weeks later with a victory at Powerman Alabama in Irondale, Ala. Several other athletes from the region also turned in stellar performances at these races.

BADMANN, ZEIGER TO DUEL AT BLACKWATER EAGLEMAN
Three-time Hawaii Ironman Champion Natasha Badmann and
Baltimore’s own Dr. Joanna Zeiger, 4th place women's finisher at the 2000
Sydney Olympic Games, will go head to head at this year’s Blackwater EagleMan
Triathlon, to be held on June 9 th in Cambridge, MD. Defending EagleMan Champion, Andrea Fisher
from Austin, TX will again be racing this year. This will be the strongest elite
field in Eagleman’s long, storied history. Insiders tell The Mid-Atlantic
Monthly that race management is currently in hot pursuit of 2001 Hawaii Ironman

USA TRIATHLON ANNOUNCES DRAFT-LEGAL SERIES FOR JUNIORS
USA Triathlon has announced that it will stage a draft-legal, four-race national triathlon series for juniors and under-23’s this year. The races, for triathletes ages16 to 23, will be held June 30 in San Antonio, Fl., July 20 in Traverse City, Mich. and Aug. 3-4 in Troutdale, Ore. A national championship and world championship qualifier will be held Sept. 21-22 in Bristol, NH. The New Hampshire race will qualify three 16-19-year-olds in each gender, and three of each gender in the 23-under category. The 16-19-year-olds race will be the sprint distance, while the under-23s will race the Olympic distance. Athletes who are 18 and 19 can choose either the sprint or Olympic distance race.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS FILLING QUICKLY
Both
major age group championships for 2002 are beginning to fill. The USA Triathlon
National Age Group Qualifier to be held on June 15th in Lake Placid, NY, has
close to 300 athletes already registered. The Lake Placid event will qualify
athletes for slots on Team USA for the 2002 ITU Triathlon World Championship.
That race will be Nov. 9-10 in Cancun, Mexico. Seven slots per age group are

The USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship will be
held over Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31) in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The Coeur
d'Alene race will qualify athletes for Team USA in 2003 to compete in the ITU
Queensland World Championship in New Zealand. To date, 96 athletes have
registered for this event, which has a very challenging course. Ten slots per
age group will be awarded through Coeur d'Alene for the 2003 World

TRI-AMERICA TRIATHLON SERIES NOW SET WITH SIX STOPS
The new
Tri-America Triathlon Series has announced the remaining two locations for its
six-venue triathlon tour. The latest
additions to the series are Hampton, Va on June 22-23 and Lake Lanier Islands,
Ga on Aug. 17-18. The series begins in Dallas, Tx on April 13-14 and continues
at Lake Havasu, Az on May 18-19; Louisville, KY on July 27-28; and Orlando, FL

Organizers
expect to expand to 10 locations in 2003. Each stop in the series will include
an Olympic distance triathlon, a kid’s triathlon, a 5K run, and a two-day
interactive Tri-America Festival of Fitness and Sports.

MRS. T'S RACE FILLING QUICKLY
For those
of you planning to race the popular Mrs. T's Chicago Triathlon (August 25),
please note that there are only 1,600 slots remaining for the race. That might
sound like plenty of room, but the race accepts more than 6,300 people, meaning it's already over two-thirds
full.
Registration
for the race opened in mid-January and is expected to fill sometime in early
April, 30-45 days earlier than it did last year.
The race
is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
To celebrate 20 years of successful racing, the prize purse has been
expanded from $40,000 to $50,000, the pro awards have been moved to right after
the finish of the pro race, and more food and a new beer will be offered at the
post-race party.
