OFFICIALS CLINIC
Region to offer certification for new officials.
Have you ever thought about becoming a race official or wondered what it takes to become one? Well, now’s your chance to find out. USAT-MA will be holding its first officials certification clinic at the Columbia Triathlon on May 18th and 19th in Columbia, Maryland. Don Hodgen, the Regional Coordinator for Officials will be conducting this two-day certification program which includes on-course duties during the Columbia Triathlon. AT THE RACES
Starting next month, we will begin a series of race previews to highlight upcoming races in the region. The articles will be written by Bob Mina, an age-group triathletes from suburban Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Many of you may already be familiar with Hurricane Bob from his monthly columns in xtri.com. The monthly articles will combine Bob’s unique perspective and brand of humor with important race information, course descriptions and helpful tips. USAT RELEASES 2001 RANKINGS
USA Triathlon recently released its Duathlon and Triathlon rankings for 2001. The rankings include nearly 12,000 athletes, a 27 percent increase over 2000. Special congratulations go out to region member Erik Scott, 31, from State College, PA. Erik was named Male Duathlete of the Year by USAT. The highlight of his season was a 1st place finish at the Duathlon Short Course World Championships in Rimini, Italy. He also had great performances at the National Duathlon Championships, Blackwater Traverse Duathlon,, Lighter Than Air Duathlon and the Shamrock Duathlon where he won the race. ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR 2002 USAT CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS
Online registration is now available for the 2002 Mrs.
T's Pierogies USA Triathlon World Championship Qualifier in Lake Placid, N.Y.,
and the 2002 Mrs. T's Pierogies USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships
in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The world
championship qualifier in Lake Placid on June 15, 2002 is the last chance for
age groupers to qualify for the 2002 ITU World Triathlon Championships on Oct.
9-10 in Cancun, Mexico. The age group
national championships on Aug. 31, 2002 in Idaho will qualify participants for
the 2003 ITU World Triathlon Championships on Dec. 2 in Queenstown, New
Zealand.

PASSING THE TORCH
New Jersey triathlete Clarinda Brueck was one of just 26 torchbearers to carry the Olympic flame over the 40-mile route in New Jersey. Brueck, who lost her left arm below the elbow, has competed in the Hawaii Ironman four times. Also carrying the Olympic torch was Arlington, VA triathlete (and USAT-MA Board member) Melissa Merson.

that will include a list of USAT certified triathlon coaches in the region, all youth /junior /collegiate races, camps,
clinics, clubs in the region, plus regional and state sports organizations and
their associated publications, and high
schools with high profile swimming and track or cross country teams. If you have

IRONMAN RACING RETURNS TO OAHU THIS AUGUST
Ironman racing will return to the place it was born this August with Ironman: 1978 Revisted, an Ironman race that will travel the original race course on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
The race will be held on Sunday, August 25 and will benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), a charitable organization that helps disabled athletes purchase handcycles, wheelchairs and other equipment. The field is limited to 100 athletes and, as in the early days of Ironman racing, a support crew will be allowed. Entry fees are $1,250 per person, with $1,000 of that fee going to the CAF as a charitable donation. Fundraising materials such as postcards, videos, "Friends asking Friends" email software and fundraising kits will be available through CAF. NATIONAL TRIATHLON SERIES TO LAUNCH THIS SPRING
The Tri America Triathlon Series is a new national triathlon series being held in six exciting venues this year, with plans to expand to ten venues in 2003. Each stop in the series will include an international distance triathlon, a kid's triathlon, a 5K run, and a two-day interactive Tri America Festival of Fitness and Sports. The 2002 series will kick-off in Dallas-Irving, Texas on April 13-14, concluding with the series finale at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida on September 28-29. Other confirmed stops in the series include Lake Havasu, Arizona, May 18-19, and Louisville, Kentucky on July 27-28. The June 22-23 and August 17-18 stops will be announced shortly.
