Several athletes from the region turned in stellar performances at the 12th Annual Great Floridian Triathlon on October 12th in Clermont, Fla. The race served as the USA Triathlon national championship for the iron-distance, featuring a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and a 26.2-mile run.† Two of the top 10 menís finishers were from the Mid-Atlantic region as were 3 of the top 10 women.† Regional members also captured numerous age group awards.†

Peter Kotland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Sara Weaver (Naples, Fla.) won the menís and womenís races.† Kotland rolled off a 3:05:29 marathon to finish in a time of 9:23:20, winning by 11 minutes over Adam Carlson (Atlanta, Ga.).† Weaverís finishing time of 10:40:07 bested second place woman, Kim Donaldson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) by over 20 minutes.

The top male finisher from the Mid-Atlantic region was Chris Gebhardt (Fort Lee, N.J.), who finished 5th overall in 9:49:01.† Erik DeRoche (Charlotte, N.C.) finished in 9th place in 9:55:58.† The top female finisher from the region was Lisa Warren (Sykesville, Pa.), whose 11:39:02 was good enough for 5th place overall.† Kathleen Malone (Columbus, N.C.) finished close behind in 6th place in 11:39:54 and Jacqueline Miller (Pineville, N.C.) finished in 7th place in 11:45:30.
