Unlike last year's race, which saw stormy weather and a
cancelled swim, race conditions were perfect for this year's Dewey Beach Sprint
Triathlon, held on September 14, 2002 in Dewey Beach, Delaware. This sprint race consisted of a 0.5 mile
ocean swim, a 16 mile bike and a 3.5 mile run.
The race also served as this year's USAT Mid-Atlantic Sprint
Championship. Bill Kvetkas (Annapolis,
Md.) and Hollie Kenney (Baltimore, Md.) captured the overall men’s and women’s
crowns.
In a tight finish in the men's race, 40 year old Kvetkas edged
out 25 year old John Chambers (Washington, D.C.) by a slim 21 second
margin. Their times were 1:15:31 and
1:15:52 respectively. Colin Robertson,
26 years old, from Philadelphia, PA took third place in the men's race, with a time
of 1:17:32.
Kenney, 29, was the female overall winner with an impressive
time of 1:18:57. She was followed by
second place finisher, 33 year old Christy Underdonk (Kensington, Md.), in a
time of 1:22:33 and third place finisher, 35 year old Nancy Watson (Newark,
Del.), in 1:24:05.
The Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon remains one of the region's
most popular races. This year's event
closed out weeks prior to race day.
Over 1,000 racers competed in the event. More than 100 of these racers were participating in their first
triathlon.
